Widely used against rheumatic pain and in case of dislocations by the indigenous populations of the Chilean Andes, these leaves are full of health benefits.

Below you can find out everything about boldo!

Boldo variety

According to the nutritionist Ana Paula GonçalvesNutrition and Dietetics Supervisor at São Cristóvão Saúde, there are five types of boldo.

The most common and used in Brazil are the Chilean Boldo (Peumus boldus Molina), also called true boldo, and the Boldo-da-terra (Coleus barbatus or Plectranthus barbatus), – or false boldo, very common in the country, with boldine, rosmarinic acid and forskolin among its active ingredients.

The professional also explains that the planting of these species should preferably be carried out in regions with a tropical climate, although they also develop in colder regions. However, boldo does not tolerate waterlogged soil.

Benefits of boldo tea

Ana Paula highlights that consuming boldo tea brings the following benefits:

For the liver

The plant contains a substance called boldina, which is an antioxidant present mainly in Chilean boldo, and forskolin and barbatusin, present in Brazilian boldo. They stimulate the production of bile by the liver (choleretic action) and its excretion in the duodenum (cholagogue action). Bile is made up of different substances and is essential for the digestion of fats and the absorption of some vitamins;

Diuretic action

The presence of glycosylated flavonoids, responsible for the diuretic action of this plant, helps reduce excess body fluids and, consequently, weight loss. “But remember, a single food alone is not capable of promoting weight loss”, underlines the nutritionist;

Helps digestion

Since it contains bioactive compounds such as boldo, which improves the action of bile released from the gallbladder into the intestine, boldo helps in the digestion of fats and provides relief in cases of poor digestion. “Its action is optimized if the tea is taken before or immediately after meals. Furthermore, it acts as a relaxant, regulator of intestinal functions and can be useful for treating constipation”, underlines Ana Paula Gonçalves. Another benefit of boldo is that it helps reduce the production of intestinal gas, as well as helping treat cases of worms and infections;

Slows down premature aging

It occurs due to the phenolic compounds present in tea;

Helps with hangovers

Boldo helps cleanse a substance produced by the liver after drinking alcohol, called acetaldehyde, which is mainly responsible for hangover symptoms, such as dry mouth, headache and malaise. “In addition, boldine acts as a liver protector, helping to restore this organ.”;

Fat in the liver

The plant’s antioxidants act as liver protectors in case of hepatic steatosis, i.e. excess fat in the liver, preventing symptoms such as headaches, nausea and malaise.

How to prepare boldo tea

ingredients

  • 200 ml of water;
  • 1 teaspoon dried boldo leaves.

Method of preparation

Mix one teaspoon of dried, finely chopped pocket leaves (or one sachet) in a 150ml cup to 200ml of boiling water. Turn off the heat and let it rest for 10 minutes. After waiting, filter and drink hot or cold up to twice a day, especially before and after main meals.

“Variation: lemon boldo tea”

Although the taste is not the best, boldo tea has numerous benefits and is present in Brazilian culture as it is a medicinal herb that can be used in various situations. “The association of boldo and lemon provides, on the part of the boldo, the stimulus to the functioning of the liver, treating problems of the gallbladder and improving many others of the organ itself; on the part of the lemon, the antioxidant action of the fruit and the ‘Citric acid in its composition can improve digestion and help fight oxidative stress, i.e. premature aging,’ suggests the nutritionist.

Consumption and restrictions

According to the expert, the ideal is to consume no more than 2 cups of tea per day (1 to 2 dry boldo capsules per day). Furthermore, consumption for more than 30 consecutive days can cause liver poisoning, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Some studies indicate that, in excess, it can cause gastric irritation.

“Boldo is also contraindicated for pregnant and breastfeeding women, or for children under 6 years of age, for people with diagnosed liver or kidney disease, as well as for individuals who constantly use certain medications, such as anticoagulants “, concludes the specialist.
