Brazil has guidance for healthcare professionals on how to use medicinal cannabis and under what conditions. We have no solid evidence in the literature showing that cannabis is effective for Parkinson’s disease“, says the neurologist John BrainerProfessor of Medicine at Unifesp and Centro Universitário São Camilo – SP.

The doctor explains that, among neurological diseases, medicinal cannabis has a proven effect only in the treatment of some cases of epilepsy. “For Parkinson’s it is a placebo effect. The family [do paciente] we end up believing it, but unfortunately there is no clinical proof yet“, He says.

To the press, Suplicy reported that he began treatment after importing a bottle of industrialized cannabis in February. The delegate specified that he takes five drops of the substance at breakfast, five drops in the afternoon and another five in the evening.

The MP’s condition is also treated with the use of Prolopa, a traditional medicine against the disease. “It is very likely that any improvement in the deputy’s condition will be due to the use of the drug, which contains the substance Levodopa in its composition. It works to replace dopamine, which is missing in the bodies of Parkinson’s patients.“, underlines the neurologist.

Levodopa is available in the Unified Health System (SUS). Brainer emphasizes, however, that the ideal treatment for this condition goes beyond medications and involves a multidisciplinary team. “Since it is a degenerative disease, medications will be insufficient over time. It is equally important to consult a nutritionist, physiotherapist, psychologist and speech therapist.“, he states.
