Last Thursday evening, September 21st, one of the greatest personalities to ever play for the Brazilian women’s volleyball team died. Walewska Oliveira, at 43 years old. According to information released by the G1 news portal, the athlete had fallen from the 17th floor of the building where she lived.

The CBV, Brazilian Volleyball Confederation, confirmed the death of Walewska Oliveira by releasing a statement. In a statement, the institution recalled the player’s main titles, which he played as a center on the pitch. The president of the CBV, Radames Lattari, expressed solidarity with the case. “With sadness and immense regret, the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) received the news of the death of Olympic champion Walewska on Thursday evening

An exceptionally talented center, Walewska defended the Brazilian women’s team for many years. In addition to the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Games, she won bronze at Sydney 2000, she has won three Grand Prix titles, the 1999 Pan American Games and the 2013 European Cup.

‘Walewska was a special player, her sporting career will be remembered and revered forever. In this difficult moment, the CBV stands in solidarity with the family and friends of this great player”, says the president of the CBV, Radamés Lattari.”

History of Walewska Oliveira in sport

Former player Walewska Oliveira played for the Brazilian volleyball team during the 2008 Beijing Games. There, in the East, she won the first Olympic gold in Brazilian women’s volleyball together with the team. This, however, was not Wal’s first medal in the world’s most important competition. The Minas Gerais native joined the national team in 1997 and, in 2000, at the Sydney Olympic Games, she won a bronze medal.

In addition to the Brazilian team, Walewska Oliveira also played for some clubs, such as Minas, Osasco and the last one in her career, Praia Clube. In an interview published in 2022 by Globo Esporte, the former player spoke about her retirement: “My career has been beautiful. I have to thank everyone very much, Praia Clube for ending my career here, for being part of this group. I will cherish this moment for the rest of my life”.

Off the pitch, in 2023, Walewska published her autobiographical book, entitled “Other Networks”. In it she says that, at the age of 12, she left home and took a bus for her first test on the fields, with the Minas team. The former player also explored the audiovisual world and published the documentary “The Last Act”.
