Child swallows magnetic balls and loses part of intestine

The case happened in England. The mother complains about the delay in diagnosis

A 2-year-old boy swallowed 6 magnetic balls and lost part of his intestine due to a delay in diagnosis. According to the girl’s mother, Jade Berriman, the symptoms of severe pain and heartburn began on September 2, but the little girl was soon removed from the health center (the Story Street Walk-in Center, in the city of Hull, in England), as doctors thought it was simply an infection.

A week later, the child was taken by his mother to a hospital (Hull University Teaching Hospital) and diagnosed with tonsillitis. She once again was given medication and was released home.

Little Meliyah’s correct diagnosis came only later, after the little girl vomited “liters of a dark green liquid.” “I took the doctor and cried and asked them to do more tests. She was dying. I knew she was dying and I knew she was leaving me. She was getting weaker. It was terrible. I can’t even describe what she was like,” Jade told the Daily Mirror newspaper.

The child underwent emergency surgery, which lasted three hours, which involved the removal of approximately 40 centimeters of intestine. After the accident, Jade warned her parents about the risks of this toy. “Don’t buy those metal balls. Obviously it’s my fault too, she must have swallowed them when I had my back turned to her for a second, but I want to raise awareness about how dangerous these balls can be,” the mother said.

After the procedure to remove the toys from her stomach, Meliyah spent seven days in hospital before being released. She is now recovering at home. Her mother thinks that her daughter swallowed the balls individually and that, being magnets, they joined together in the little girl’s intestine, opening a hole.
