Streaming companies band together to tackle regulation

Streaming companies – including Netflix and Disney – have formed the Streaming Innovation Alliance (SIA), a trade group through which the companies will address current and future U.S. government regulations related specifically to streaming. The information was published by Axios.

For those in a hurry:

The formation of the SIA comes as regulators look for ways to address changes in the entertainment landscape, where there are more and more content creators on social platforms. The fact is that these companies don’t necessarily want to be associated with these platforms, even though they all offer streaming content.

Group of streaming companies

In addition to Netflix and Disney, Axios lists as SIA members: Paramount Plus, Warner Bros. Discovery, Peacock, TelevisaUnivision, and some smaller services (e.g. For Us By Us Network, Vault, and AfroLandTV).

Other streaming services – Pluto and Hulu, for example – are already owned by Paramount and Disney, so they are also part of SIA “by default”.

Also according to Axios, Apple, Amazon, Roku and Tubi are not currently part of the new business group.

Trajectory

The formation of the trade group was led in part by Motion Picture Association (MPA) CEO Charles Rivkin.

Netflix joined the MPA in 2019 and left the Internet Association, a larger trade group representing technology companies, for example: Google and Amazon. That’s because it can’t help streaming companies with intellectual property disputes and, in some cases, could conflict with them.

Streaming companies exist in a sort of limbo between worlds on the Internet, as pointed out by The limitbecause they can be involved in legislation targeting other aspects.

Streaming companies are generally in favor of net neutrality. And this has been a difficult concept for lawmakers and regulators in Washington DC to fully understand.

They are also facing customized tax demands – for example: efforts to tax streaming services like local networks. In this case, stricter regulation could impact your profits.
