The singer, musician and writer Caetano Veloso had the pleasure of meeting the highest leader of the Catholic Church this Thursday 28th, Pope francesco. At the meeting, which took place in a private audience, Caetano was accompanied by his wife, a producer and entrepreneur Paula Lavigne.

The invitation to the meeting was initially sent by Pope Francis in June this year. The pontiff would have suggested to Caetano Veloso to participate in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Vatican Museums of Contemporary Art. Unfortunately the singer had to postpone his trip due to the flu.
Touring Europe with the show “Meu Coco”, Caetano now takes advantage of his stay in the Old Continent to finally meet the greatest leader of the Church. He also performed at Parco della Musica, in Rome, Italy, last Wednesday the 27th.
“Today we had the honor of being received by His Holiness Pope Francis in the Vatican. Thanks to the Holy Father for the invitation and for the generosity with which he welcomed us. Thanks to Monsignor Polvani and Angélica Ferreira for the welcome, and to His Eminence Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça. And to the journalist Gerson Camarotti, who followed the entire preparation of the meeting”wrote Caetano Veloso on his social media.

Caetano Veloso’s requests to the pontiff
In the images shared by Caetano Veloso and Paula Lavigne on Instagram, we can see the artist delivering a letter to the religious leader. In it Caetano begins to talk about his origins and mentions his mother, Dona Canô, devotee of Our Lady of Purification. It was his desire to clean up the Subaé river, in Bahia, and restore the church dedicated to the saint, located in the city of Santo Amaro da Purificação, where the artist was born.
In his text Caetano Veloso also focuses on the children who have unjustly lost their lives due to the aggressive policy of the war on drugs in Rio de Janeiro. Cite the case of Eloah da Silva dos Santosdied at the age of 5 from a stray bullet in Morro do Dendê, a community in the Ilha do Governador, Northern Zone of Rio.
Even in Bahia, the singer’s home state, violence prevails. Caetano Veloso talks about the large-scale deaths that occurred during police clashes across the state in September, especially in the suburbs of large cities.
