Italian brand Prada and Texas-based startup Axiom Space announced this Wednesday (4) a collaboration to create NASA’s lunar spacesuits for the Artemis III mission, scheduled for 2025.
This will be the first manned moon landing since the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972, and will also be the first to land a woman on the Moon.
Throughout the entire creation process, the Prada and Axiom Space teams will work side by side to develop innovative solutions in terms of materials and design capable of providing protection and meeting the challenges of a unique environment such as the lunar one.
According to Lorenzo Bertelli, Marketing Director of the Prada Group, “Prada’s constantly innovative spirit for humanity has expanded to the desire for adventure and to explore new horizons: space”. “It’s a true celebration of the power of human creativity and innovation to advance civilization,” he added.
In a statement, Prada explains that the AxEMU spacesuit will provide astronauts with advanced capabilities for space exploration, while offering NASA the commercially developed human systems needed to access, live and work on and around the Moon.
The pieces are an evolution of NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) model and are designed to provide greater flexibility and protection in a hostile environment, as well as being equipped with specialized tools for exploration and scientific activities.
“Prada’s technical expertise with raw materials, manufacturing techniques and innovative design concepts will bring advanced technologies critical to ensuring not only the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface, but also the much-needed human factors considerations absent in spacesuits traditional.” , said Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space.
The company has a contract with the U.S. space agency to develop spacesuits for use on the Moon and in other space programs. .
