Bruises: when to worry about purple spots on the body?

Find out when these skin changes could indicate a more serious disease

In the vast majority of cases, the bruises, purple spots that appear on the skin after shots or blood tests, for example, pose no health risk. “Hematomas occur when blood leaves the inside of the vessels due to some type of trauma, accumulating in other parts of the body, such as under the skin. In general, they are small, limited to the site of the trauma and stop growing “, explains the vascular surgeon Dr. Aline Lamaitamember of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery.

“The extravasated blood no longer circulates, disappearing after a few days as it is absorbed by the body’s defense cells. This reabsorption involves a series of chemical reactions that change the color of the blood and its metabolites, which is why bruises lighten with the weather”.

According to her, there are people who are more prone to bruising, which can be associated with conditions such as varicose veins. “Predisposed patients varicose veins AND spider veins they suffer from what we call hair fragility. In these cases, any more intense effort or sudden contact that puts pressure on the vessels, such as during exercises with bodybuilding machines, can cause rupture of these vessels resulting in blood leakage, leading to the appearance of “purple spots”, especially when the patient is menstruating or bloated,” she says.

Lipedema is another condition that commonly triggers capillary fragility, favoring the appearance of purple spots on the body. Lipedema is a disease characterized by the accumulation of adipose tissue with a disproportionate increase in the size of the limbs. The disease mainly affects areas such as thighs, culottes, hips and legs, but, possibly, it can also affect the arms, but less frequently”, we read.

Uncontrolled hypertension, use of contraceptives AND drugs that alter coagulation These are also factors that can contribute to increasing the fragility of the vessel wall. “Therefore, if you have noticed that purple spots appear more easily, it is important to consult a doctor to see if there is any problem behind them,” he advises.

WHEN TO WORRY ABOUT BREAMS?

Self bruises begin to appear spontaneously AND in various locations of the body, a warning signal must be activated. Furthermore, if accompanied by bleeding in other areas, such as gums and nose, e fever, weakness OR weight loss, purple spots may suggest the presence of a more serious situation. Among the possible ones are:

  • Blood clotting disorders;
  • Acute leukemia, a type of cancer that leads to the abnormal production of blood cells;
  • Autoimmune diseases;
  • Marrow aplasia (when there is less production of cells in the blood);
  • Infections, such as dengue and yellow fever.

“Some of these diseases, such as acute leukemia, are very serious and should be diagnosed as early as possible, to start treatment immediately. So, when you notice the random appearance of bruises, it is advisable consult a professional as soon as possible. Only he will be able to carry out an assessment and correctly diagnose the problem,” she concludes.
