Find out how to keep your lashes strong and healthy

The ophthalmologist gives incredible tips for taking care of your eyelashes and, consequently, also your eye health as a whole

Taking care of your eyelashes is not just an aesthetic question, but also a question of eye health. After all, eyelashes play a crucial role in protecting your eyes from dust, dirt and foreign particles.

They practically constitute a barrier in this sense, helping to prevent eye infections and irritation. Additionally, they help maintain adequate moisture on the surface of the eyes, which is essential for preventing dry eyes and discomfort.

But do not worry! Taking care of your eyelashes is not at all complicated. In fact, it is enough to follow some simple but essential advice on what to do or not to do in relation to this hair.

And to help you with this, we have collected some tips from Dr. Marcelo Brito, ophthalmologist, to strengthen your eyelashes and make them healthier:

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes as this may cause your eyelashes to fall out.
  • Gently remove eye makeup every evening
  • Maintain a balanced diet rich in proteins and vitamins, such as biotin and vitamin E, which promote eyelash growth
  • Use a good quality mascara, but don’t let it dry completely between coats.
  • Avoid excessive use of eyelash curlers as this can weaken the eyelashes.
  • Do not share or lend cosmetics, including eyelash products, as this can transmit eye infections such as conjunctivitis

Another thing that can help, according to the doctor, is the use of topical products, such as eyelash serum enriched with peptides and vitamins. However, in this case, you should consult an ophthalmologist before you start using it, especially if you have concerns about your eye health. They will be able to recommend the most suitable product for you.

Advice for those who use eyelash extensions

In recent times more and more people have resorted to eyelash extensions. However, for those who have also tried this procedure, even more care is needed with their hair to avoid problems.

Thaís Giraldelli, eyelash extension specialist, warns that it is very important to clean your eyelashes every day, as the accumulation of oil and makeup residue can interfere with the life of the extension and put your eye health at risk.

“With a soft makeup brush, neutral shampoo and cold water, create a lather, rub gently with the brush and rinse thoroughly,” she explains, also warning that you shouldn’t skip maintenance, which should be done as soon as possible. every 20 days and also in advance, if necessary.

If you plan to have an eye exam while wearing extensions, it is also important to inform your eye doctor so that he or she can take appropriate steps to effectively evaluate your eye health. During ophthalmological operations they must be removed.

Finally, pay attention to possible allergies to eyelash glue, which can manifest as itching, redness, swelling or irritation of the eyes after applying extensions. “Your doctor may perform allergy testing to confirm the diagnosis and recommend treatments, such as switching to hypoallergenic glues,” warns Dr. Marcelo.
