World Mental Health Day takes on a special meaning this year as it represents the global commitment to greater awareness of the problem and its defense as a universal right. “Everyone should have the right to live a life with dignity, fairness, equality and respect”, recalls the World Health Organization (WHO).

The entity recognizes that stigma, discrimination and human rights violations continue to persist. Therefore, people suffering from mental health problems do not always have access to quality services and are subject to coercive practices, inhumane treatment and, in some cases, even abuse.

Therefore, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) argues that it is up to nations to promote “regulatory and regulatory initiatives to support mental health as a fundamental human right and, at the same time, limit practices that facilitate human rights violations.” As an example, the entity cites the establishment of laws that protect citizens.

What is the purpose of World Mental Health Day?

Established in 1992 by the World Federation of Mental Health and supported by the WHO, the date aims to draw attention to a topic that is still treated as a taboo in societies such as Brazil.

Since 2020, the cause has gained even more prominence, as the Covid-19 pandemic is also believed to have created a global mental health crisis. Data cited by the Senate, for example, indicate that in that year alone there was a 25% increase in cases of anxiety and depression.

Tips for taking care of your mental health

Practice knowing yourself

Knowing yourself is the first step towards solving many problems. Look for ways to understand (and embrace) your pain, feelings, and emotions. This process will be best guided with therapeutic help.

Maintain healthy social relationships

Be present (valid through digital means if physical presence is not practical) in the lives of those who love you and do good for you. Surround yourself with family and friends who will be your support network, just as you will be part of theirs.

Set limits

Those who have already gone through or are going through the phase of self-knowledge understand themselves sufficiently to know what their limits are in relationships and attributions. Learn to say “no” – “not now”, “I can’t”, “I don’t want”, “I can’t” – respecting your time and your body.

Practice self-compassion

It is not difficult to treat others with kindness, care and compassion. Do the same with yourself. If personal responsibility isn’t about punishing yourself, then don’t overdo self-criticism.

Maintain a balanced routine

Working is necessary. Also take care of household chores. But look for gaps in your daily life to rest, exercise, distract yourself, and sleep well. This is also essential.

Train regularly

Much more than aesthetics, regular physical activity promotes health. Consistency can increase disposition, improve self-esteem and reduce problems such as stress and anxiety.

Eat well

Another health ally is food. It is known that a balanced diet can have positive effects on mental health, so don’t neglect this part of the day.

Practice relaxation techniques
