The expert explains how this practice helps maintain the body’s flexibility and strengthens the muscles
There was a time when children and teenagers enjoyed playing ball, hide and seek, tag, dodgeball, jumping rope and hula hoop. Today, most people entertain themselves in front of their cell phones or television. In other words, the possibility of developing a postural problem is high, in addition to not practicing an activity that involves movement.
“In adolescence we observe a decrease in body flexibility, the appearance of joint and growth pain and a difference in the speed of development of different parts of the body. Not to mention the shape of the body that changes practically every day during the growth spurt” , explains pilates instructor Suely Tambalo.
Pilates for children and adolescents
Pilates is an alternative healthy for children and teenagers. “From the age of 4 or 5 it is already possible to introduce some principles of the method, such as the perception of the mechanism of breathing and natural movements, such as rolling and imitating animals, always in a playful way and exploring the children’s creativity, asking their solutions for mobility challenges,” says Suely Tambalo.

Recommended types of exercises
For teenagers and children, the Pilates instructor recommends exercises that test motor skills and involve movements that they already practice daily. You exercises performed on equipment and with accessories of foam cylinders, bosu (inflated rubber hemisphere fixed to a rigid platform) and Swiss balls also excite and motivate, as well as helping in the correct execution of the exercises, encouraging overcoming.
Important precautions
According to Suely Tambalo, when performing exercises with equipment, close attention must be paid to the load that the springs will impose, since these must be adapted to the abilities of the young person.
