Find out some important rules for boarding flights with animals
An emotional support dog is an animal trained to provide comfort, support, and emotional relief to people dealing with mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, among others. Unlike guide dogs, which are trained to assist people with visual impairments, emotional support dogs are intended to offer psychological support and well-being.
Travel with emotional support animals
In Brazil there is no specific legislation regulating the transportation of people with emotional support animals in the airplane cabin. Therefore, the guidelines are determined by the airlines and may vary depending on the destination, both domestic and international. On the other hand, companies usually offer the possibility for owners to travel with their pets in the airplane cabin. Generally this type of service is called “pet in the cabin.”
In Latam, for example, travel with an emotional support dog is only permitted on routes between Brazil and abroad – which recognize the concept of an emotional support animal -, i.e. on international flights with origin or destination in Mexico, or Colombia, and on domestic flights in Colombia.
According to the National Agency for Civil Aviation (ANAC), with ordinance no. 12.307, “the air carrier may determine the price to be paid for its transportation services transport of pets or emotional assistance”.

Documentation for traveling with your dog
In addition to presenting a medical document certifying the need to travel with the emotional support dog, the owner must first request the airline to travel with the animal and fill in some forms made available by the company.
In fact, air transporters can request other documents such as the animal’s vaccination card and the International Veterinary Certificate (CVI), which is issued by the Ministry of Agricultural, Livestock and Supply Policies.
Travel tips
In addition to the pet’s age and weight requirement, some airlines require the pet to wear an identification collar and, if requested by the crew, a muzzle. In addition, the passenger must carry with him hygienic carpet so that the animal can satisfy its physiological needs.
Furthermore, ANAC ordinance n. 12.307 explains that, before travel, animals must undergo a safety check and owners will have to demonstrate compliance with all the hygienic-sanitary and veterinary requirements established by law.
Furthermore, the document also establishes that the airline can offer the service of transporting the emotional assistance animal in the passenger cabin or registered in the luggage compartment and in the hold of the aircraft, in compliance with specific operational safety and aviation security regulations. civil.
In this sense, there are companies that recommend that the emotional support animal be transported on the feet of the legal guardianand not be placed in the emergency exit.
