Find out how hormone deficiency affects children’s growth

The doctor explains the causes, symptoms and importance of early diagnosis for the well-being of the little ones

Growth hormone deficiency is an endocrine condition that directly affects the physical development and height of children. According to medical literature, it is a disease considered rare, as it affects one in 4 thousand children in the world.

It occurs mainly because the pituitary gland (gland at the bottom of the brain) produces little GH, the so-called growth hormone, causing short stature, delayed teething and other symptoms. Fortunately, with early diagnosis and treatment of the deficiency, it is possible to cure and minimize its effects.

“Growth hormone deficiency can have various origins, from congenital causes, i.e. you are born with it, to lesions, infections or tumors in the pituitary gland. [glândula que produz o hormônio], Autoimmune diseases and the use of certain drugs, such as long-term corticosteroids”, explains the pediatric endocrinologist of Sabin Diagnóstico e Saúde, Pietra Luz Moleirinho Lima.

Symptoms of hormonal deficiency

In addition to lack of growth, other symptoms can also indicate a deficiency. I am:

  • Low blood sugar at birth;
  • Lack or delay in sexual development during puberty;
  • Squeaky voice;
  • Fine hair.

When combined with other hormone deficiencies, it can also cause excessive thirst, excessive urination, and facial abnormalities, which are rarer.

Medical monitoring is important to diagnose the disease

Diagnosis of the disease

The diagnosis of hormonal deficiency in children involves an evaluation detailed clinic, blood tests, and in some cases, imaging tests such as MRI. One of the first steps is to observe whether growth is following standards. In the first year of life, for example, the baby should grow by about 25 centimeters. Between the ages of three and the onset of puberty, 5 to 7 centimeters per year.

“Medical monitoring during the child’s growth process is very important to identify a possible GH hormone deficiency in the early stages. After diagnosis, it is the doctor who can identify the cause of the deficiency and indicate the best treatment”, guides specialist.

Blood test to identify the condition

When certain symptoms related to hormone deficiency appear, your doctor may also order blood tests to confirm the diagnosis. According to Luciana Figueira, biochemist and technical coordinator of Sabin in Manaus, the test is carried out when short stature or a total lack of growth is found starting from the age of two.

“The diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency is also made through blood tests to measure GH (growth hormone) levels. The test must be carried out while fasting and under supervision to the endocrinologist, who will follow you throughout the process of collecting the samples for analysis. The result is ready in four working days”, explains the professional.

Treatment for hormone deficiency

Pediatric endocrinologist Pietra Moleirinho emphasizes that “with adequate treatment, which includes growth hormone replacement, adequate nutrition and good lifestyle habitsit is possible to minimize the effects of the disease and promote adequate and healthy growth.”
