Former president of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari dies in London

The former president of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari, who led the most populous country in Africa from 2015 to 2023 and was the first Nigerian president to fire a occupant from the assignment through the polls, died in London on Sunday, said a presidential spokesman.

“President Buhari died today in London around 16:30 (1530 GMT), after a prolonged illness,” said the spokesman for President Bola Tinubu in an X.

Buhari, 82 years old, who led the country for the first time as a military sovereign after a blow in the 80s, won an audience dedicated by its sign of anti -corruption policy.

He referred to himself as a “converted democratic” and exchanged his military uniform for the Kaftans and prayer puffs.

“I belong to everyone and I don’t belong to anyone”, it was a constant chorus that Buhari told both supporters and critics.

Buhari defeated Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 in what has been considered the most beautiful election of Nigeria to date. Many hoped that the major retired general repressed the armed groups, just as he had done as head of the military state of the country.

Instead, the violence that was confined mainly to the north -est of the country spread. This left parts of Nigeria out of the control of their security forces, while armed men in the north -ovest, armed separatists and gangs in the south -est wandered in love.

Much of his appeal was in anti -corruption ethics, which was a central element of his agenda, both as a military and civil sovereign. He said that endemic corruption in the political culture of Nigeria was delaying people.

‘Baba goes slow’

But Buhari quickly disappointed after his victory in 2015.

It took six months to appoint his office. During this period, the economy dependent on oil was compromised by low oil prices, which led people to call it “Baba to slowly”.

His second victory in 2019 took place despite his first term was damaged by the first recession of Nigeria in a generation, attacks by militants to the oil fields and repeated hospital hospitalizations.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina, in the north -west of the country, Buhari enlisted in the army at the age of 19. In the end, he reached the charge of major general.

He took power in 1983 as a military sovereign, promising to revitalize a poorly administered country. Buhari has adopted a hard line in everything, from the conditions required by the International Monetary Fund to the indiscipline in the bus lines.

In 1984, his government tried to kidnap a former minister and critic who lived in the United Kingdom. The plan failed when the employees of London airport opened the box containing the kidnapped politician.

His first period of power was short -lived. It was removed after only 18 months by another military officer, Ibrahim Babangido.

Buhari spent most of the next 30 years in marginal political parties and trying to apply for the presidency until his possible victory over Jonathan in 2015.
