4 Factors That Affect the Mental Health of Women Leaders

Businesses play a critical role in creating a fairer, healthier and more productive workplace

According to the research “Exhausted: impoverishment, overload of care and psychological suffering of women” by Think Olga, 4 out of 10 women are dissatisfied with their work. Another fact that emerges from the study is that women continue to earn less than men: on average, a Brazilian woman receives 78% less than a man for the same job, in the same role and hierarchy.

Given this scenario, Pam Stracke, CEO and co-founder of Kiwia humanized training and consulting firm that produces solutions in corporate education, inclusion, equity, diversity and helps other companies advance ESG agendas, has separated four tips that have a positive impact on the mental health of women leaders.

Empathize with yourself and the team

First and foremost, leaders need to take care of their own mental health and be well enough to care for other people. One way to do this is through empathy, the ability to put yourself in the other person’s shoes, respecting their experiences. This exercise and human quality can be done with every person and with others. The goal is to understand that experiences and perspectives open doors to understanding.

“Leaders have a responsibility to look after the health and well-being of the team. The result of this brings increased productivity and goes beyond the success of the company, impacting society in general, with the development of people,” explains the CEO and co-founder of Kiwi.

Open communication

The second tip is very connected to understanding emotions. . Talking about mental health and reinforcing the importance of emotional well-being relies heavily on active listening and open, non-judgmental communication.

“Keeping the issue alive beyond Yellow September, during all the other months of the year, without taboos, is fundamental. Leaders must learn to address these issues in a sensitive, humanized and stigma-free way,” says Pam.

Mental health training and support

Disseminate healthy mental health actions, as well as provide training and support to leaders so they can also deal with everyday crises triggered by mental health issues.

“Companies should offer psychological support, such as therapists and psychologists, to employees when necessary, this allows people to recognize warning signs and feel increasingly comfortable seeking help,” explains the executive.

Promote working conditions and decent wages

An action that can prove very effective is the establishment, in fact and in law, of parental leave which promotes the involvement of those responsible in the care of children and which allows women not to jeopardize their careers due to work treatment.

“Ensuring equal wages and benefits that contribute to the financial situation, as well as valuing care work, are relevant issues for women who lead. Overload and dissatisfaction push women to seek more mental health help and treatment,” says Pam.

Involvement of companies

In all the tips that have a positive impact on the mental health of women leaders, the company plays a vital role.

“It is through the involvement of companies that it is possible to create a fairer, healthier and more productive working environment for all workers. Investing in a socially safe and healthy environment not only benefits and enhances employees, with a more positive and supportive environment, but also increases productivity and talent retention. Furthermore, it helps create a culture of mutual respect and support,” concludes the CEO and co-founder of Kiwi.
