Kiwi: discover the benefits of the fruit

Kiwi has numerous health benefits, especially for those who do physical activity; learn more about this fruit

The kiwi has moved from southwestern China, where it is native, to many other places in the world, and today it is very popular in several places. It is widely eaten fresh and in fruit salads, and can be added to açaí, poke and numerous other recipes.

And like practically all fruits, kiwi has a wide range of benefits for the body, in this case especially for those who exercise. This is what endocrinologist Débora Palos, from Clínica Dra, explains. Maria Fernanda Barca, who lists below the general advantages of kiwi and for those who train.

Benefits of kiwi

Kiwi is low in calories and rich in vitamin C, magnesium, soluble fiber and potassium. Furthermore, it helps to fix calcium, improving the absorption of iron, increasing the body’s defenses and improving intestinal constipation. But these are only the best-known benefits of the fruit.

According to Débora, kiwi also has a high load of antioxidants, i.e. substances that fight damage and premature aging of cells. It therefore helps prevent cardiovascular diseases and some types of cancer, reduce blood pressure levels and improve the lipid profile.

If you regularly consume kiwi an hour before going to bed, there are also benefits for sleep, which will be more effective and longer.

Kiwi in training

Kiwi has several advantages for those who exercise. “It improves sleep quality thanks to the combination of antioxidants, potassium and serotonin, which is related to better training performance, and its composition of vitamins and carbohydrates, which helps provide energy for training. Its antioxidant content helps also fight free radicals, improving post-workout recovery. Furthermore, it helps prevent cramps because it contains magnesium”, underlines Débora.

Kiwi consumption is very beneficial for both an amateur and professional athlete. When it comes to consuming the fruit, it will depend on your goals. “Consuming it before training provides energy for better performance. If consumed after, it ensures better and faster recovery,” explains the professional.

Who can eat kiwi?

Kiwi does not come with bait, so most people can consume it without fear, without major restrictions. “Since it has few calories, it can be consumed, for example, by those who want to control their weight. Furthermore, diabetics can consume it in moderation thanks to its glycemic index and the fiber content in its composition,” says the expert.

Therefore, the only people who cannot eat kiwi are those allergic to actinidin, present in the fruit. This allergen can cause symptoms such as itchy throat, swelling of the tongue, wheezing, abdominal pain, among others.

Apart from that, there will only be problems if consumption is excessive. “It is recommended to consume one unit of fruit per day or three times a week, alternating it with other fruit. However, there are already studies demonstrating the relationship between the reduction of blood pressure and the consumption of three units of fruit per day. Therefore , you always need the guidance of a professional to adapt the quantities to each individual and each objective”, guarantees Débora.
