A woman undergoes cancer treatment for two years and discovers she never had the disease

Englishwoman Megan Royle even froze her eggs, as the treatment affected her fertility

Englishwoman Megan Royle, 33, was diagnosed with skin cancer, underwent treatment, which included immunotherapy and surgery, for two years and later discovered she never had the disease. The case was reported in the British press this week, after Megan reached an out-of-court settlement to receive compensation for the inconvenience.

It all started in 2019 when the theater makeup artist was diagnosed. Megan underwent surgery to remove the cancerous tissue, then underwent nine rounds of immunotherapy, which affected her fertility and thus also froze her eggs, until she was discharged in 2021.

During the pandemic he looked for another hospital. There a medical panel reviewed her tests and found that she had been misdiagnosed and that she had never had cancer.

“You can’t believe something like this could happen, and to this day I have had no explanation of how or why it happened. I spent two years believing I had cancer, I went through all the treatments and then I was said there was no cancer.” , Royle said BBC.

The news that she had never had cancer took her by surprise: “it took a while to sink in. You would think the immediate emotion would be relief, and in a way it was, but I would say the bigger emotions were frustration and anger.”

A spokesperson for the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation, responsible for the hospital where the make-up artist was treated, also issued a public apology: “We would like to offer our sincere apologies to Megan Royle for the distress caused by her experience.”
