Armpits: 5 tips to take care of and avoid unwanted odors

Contrary to popular belief, armpit care is not limited to simple cleaning and using deodorant.

Do you take care of your armpits? Neglected by most, this area deserves particular attention, especially during the hot season, when it is more exposed to the torrid climate. And it’s not about washing your armpits and putting on deodorant every time that smell appears anyway, you know?

To maintain the cleanliness and health of this area and avoid that unwanted odor, not only good daily cleaning is needed, but also other special care.

Do you want to know what they are? Below are the 5 tips from Mayla Carbone, dermatologist member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), for good armpit care, especially in the warmer seasons.

Clean properly

Due to the folds in the skin, armpits tend to be moist and, therefore, can harbor bacteria and fungal organisms. In this sense, daily cleaning is very important, but it is not possible to carry it out anyway. “This must be approached with delicacy and some precautions, such as alternating different body cleansing products or the region with a balanced pH,” explains Mayla.

Exfoliate regularly

Just like the face, the armpits can also be affected by sensitivity and skin irritation. “A lot of sebum, clogged pores, pimples, and a buildup of dead, dull, and sometimes discolored skin cells are reasons why exfoliation should extend to this region,” the dermatologist points out.

There are exfoliating masks or scrubs that manually remove dead cells and debris from the skin. Another option is chemical exfoliants, such as toners, which gently dissolve dead skin buildup in the area.

When you shave, do it carefully

If you prefer to shave, you can do so, but you need to be very careful not to cause irritation. Mayla suggests, for example, using a sharp and clean blade, avoiding pressing hard and following the direction of hair growth. Other less aggressive methods, such as laser hair removal, are also good options.

Don’t forget hydration

If you hydrate your body and face, why skip your armpits? They also need it to look good.

Because this area spends much of the day moist, Dr. Mayla recommends using a pH-balanced body or underarm lotion once or twice a week, or more, depending on the patient’s needs.

Another tip for keeping your armpits soft and supple is to take a break from shaving and using deodorant if you notice irritation.

Use deodorant wisely

Deodorant is important, but you need to make sure you’re using the right product for you. “If your deodorant causes irritation or leaves a lot of residue on your skin and clothes, choose another one,” says Mayla.

Therefore, he recommends choosing a fragrance-free deodorant that avoids phthalates, parabens, sulfates, or dyes, as these products are less likely to cause problems.

It’s also a good idea to avoid aluminum in your deodorant unless you need something more effective at blocking sweat due to hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
