6 things you shouldn’t wear while driving: expert advice

The rules of the road, which ensure the safety of all participants – drivers, passengers and pedestrians – are known to all motorists. But there are other ways to reduce risk that few people think about.

Here are some wardrobe items you shouldn’t wear if you’re driving.

Flip flops

According to all experts, these are the most dangerous shoes when it comes to driving. “They don’t provide enough grip and can easily slide, causing you to lose control of the car. In addition, flip-flops are too loose – you may not have time to brake quickly when you need to,” explains driving instructor Lukas Waldenbeck.

High heels

“High heels make it difficult to operate the pedals so that braking or accelerating is smooth. Don’t drive in stilettos: put on sneakers and change shoes when you get to your destination,” says Waldenbeck.

Coat too bulky

Wearing a heavy coat or too many layers of clothing is another mistake drivers can make. According to John Lin, owner of an auto repair shop, such things restrict movement, making it difficult to respond quickly in an emergency.

Shoes with too thick soles

Lin believes that even sneakers or boots can interfere with driving if their soles are too thick. “This reduces haptic feedback and makes it harder for you to judge how hard you are pressing the pedals,” he explains.

Big hats and long scarves

Waldenbeck warns against wearing wide-brimmed hats while driving: they can be distracting, block your view and add additional blind spots. Car safety expert Stanley Hawkin also advises drivers not to wear long scarves. “These types of accessories can get caught in the steering wheel or shifter and distract your attention from the road,” he says.

Headphones

All experts agree that you should not drive with headphones. “Seeing the road is of course the main thing. However, there are many sound signals that you should also pay attention to,” explains driving instructor Robert Muñoz.
