One of the main grunge bands in the history of music, Nirvana is the subject of some discussions that allege how the band sold itself for money – and the success conflicted with the musicians’ punk roots. Now, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic It is Steve Albini talked about this subject.
The three artists participated in the podcast Conan Needs A Friendpresented by Conan O’Briento talk about 30 years of In Utero, the group’s third and final studio album. In the episode (via NME), released last Monday, 23, O’Brien questioned whether the band’s success went against its punk origins.
First to speak out, Albini explained how he encountered several criticisms like this outside of punk culture. “I’ve never genuinely experienced this from anyone in the punk scene that wasn’t purely an expression of jealousy. Overall, Nirvana fans wanted the group to become successful, self-sustaining and beloved,” she stated.
Right away, Dave Grohl added: “Before we recorded the album Nevermind (1991), we practically lived in poverty.” During this period, he shared a small, “disgusting” apartment covered with “sausage sticks” and “cigarettes” with Kurt Cobain.
