According to estimates from the National Cancer Institute (INCA), in 2021, 15,190 new cases of cancer in the oral cavity, 11,180 in men and 4,010 in women. The disease is considered a silent disease and may go unnoticed in the early stages.
“This type of tumor affects the lip AND structures of the mouthsuch as the gums, cheeks, palate, tongue (especially the edges) and the region under the tongue,” he explains Sergio Lagodental surgeon and ambassador of the SIN Implant System.
Although the examination to identify suspicious lesions can be performed relatively easily and routinely, mouth cancer still has a high mortality rate. Having said this, the professional highlights the importance of early diagnosis to increase the chances of recovery. “The best approach to ward off the disease is to maintain regular visits to the dentist, who will be able to see signs of cancer in the early stages,” says the specialist.
SYMPTOMS OF MOUTH CANCER
The dentist says so the problem mainly affects men over the age of 40 and, when it progresses, it can cause some symptoms, including:
- Mouth sores that do not heal;
- Red dots OR whitish in the gums, oral cavity and lips;
- Thickening of the cheeks;
- Hoarseness;
- Sore throat and swallow;
- Bad breath;
- Blood in saliva or in the mouth.
RISK FACTORS
Risk factors for mouth cancer include exposure to toxic substancessuch as cement dust, asbestos and pesticides, the to smoke and the excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. “Furthermore poor oral hygiene and the excessive exposure to the sun no protection the chances of developing the pathology also increase”, adds Lago.
TREATMENT
When detected early, Lago points it out surgery to remove the lesions usually resolves the disease. However, in more complex situations, such as those involving metastases, the patient may require radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions.
