Eduardo Lima, who worked as a gas station attendant to support his family, was moved to see his paintings exhibited in the largest art museum in the world

Do you know the artist’s story? Frida Kahlo? The Mexican, who was studying to become a doctor, suffered a serious bus accident in 1925, forcing her to abandon her profession. Bedridden, she began to paint. Today she is recognized as one of the greatest surrealist painters in history.

It would be impossible not to remember the Mexican artist’s journey when learning the story of Eduardo Lima. Born in Capim Grosso, in the hinterland of the state of Bahia, the man who already had sculpture, drawing and painting as hobbies, but worked as a petrol station attendant to support his family, had a car accident and left work and I started dealing with down time every day during recovery.

Just like Frida, the post-traumatic moment helped Eduardo actually start painting. From that moment on he began to create paintings to decorate his home. There, 25 years ago, he lived with his wife, Cida Lima, and the two children, who were still children at the time. Until then she painted landscapes.

“My friends asked me if I wanted to sell it, I don’t think they even believed it was mine. I started selling it to them and with the money I bought other painting materials”said Eduardo Lima in an interview with the news portal G1. Always with the earnings, he also invests in a car to be able to transport his works and expand his sales possibilities.

From Capim Grosso to the Louvre, Paris

Eduardo Lima was perfecting his art and understanding the focus he wanted to give to his works: the populations of the northeast, as well as their lands and customs. In the Lima paintings we notice the presence of many bright colors, as well as elements such as local plants, for example cacti, and typical clothes and accessories, such as the famous leather hat.

Beyond the Northeast and Brazil, the world began to recognize the works of Eduardo Lima. Currently, some of his major paintings are exhibited at the Louvre museum in Paris, none other than the largest art museum in the world, which houses the famous Mona Lisa. The Brazilian artist’s paintings are found in the Carroussel of the collection.

On social media, the artist’s children shared a video received from their parents during a trip to the European country. In the report we see Eduardo, next to his wife, clearly emotional. “I couldn’t contain my excitement. This is a huge accomplishment!”the artist wrote in the caption.

“Today I want to thank you. Who would have thought, a boy from the north-eastern hinterland, son of a cook and a potter [pessoa que trabalho com barro]. I worked as a petrol station attendant for 9 years to support my family, a profession I am very proud of. But I had a dream: to make a living with art”said Eduardo Lima.

“Every time I talked about this dream to my friends and family, they told me: ‘Try it, you can do it’. And today I find myself in front of the most famous work in the world, the Mona Lisa, and the most special work the only thing is that my work is also exhibited in that same space. I cried with emotion, with joy, because for me it is a very great achievement and victory”he concluded.
