A 4-year-old boy undergoes an accidental vasectomy in hernia surgery

After the surgeon’s mistake, which can affect the child for the rest of his life, the parents sue the hospital. Understand what happened!

A family in Texas, United States, is suing the hospital involuntarily performed a vasectomy on a four-year-old boy. The case happened in August 2021, when the child was operated on at Texas Children’s Hospital in the city of Houston to treat a hernia. For error, the surgeon cut the tube that carries the sperm to the urethra.

The concern is that the boy will need more surgeries to be able to have children as an adult and other medical treatment as well, as he may have infertility problems for the rest of his life. The attorney representing the family, Randy Sorrels, has spoken Fox 26 Houston last Monday (13), around possibility of future consequences due to a surprising mistake from an expert. “You know things happen in life, but you don’t expect it to be in the hands of a surgeon who just cuts the wrong part of the body,” he said.

Basic mistake accident

The procedure, according to the lawyer, is to make sure you are working on the correct part of the anatomy before making any cuts, a crucial step for surgeons.

“We believe the surgeon accidentally cut the vas deferens, one of the tubes that carries sperm. This could affect that baby for the rest of his life,” Sorrels added. According to the medical records, the specialist had no history of negligence and no problems had been reported previously. Even so, the mistake, according to the lawyer, was not immediately noticed: “They only discovered it after he went to the pathological analysis.”

In a statement, a spokesperson for the hospital said the case will not be discussed publicly. “Texas Children’s Hospital’s top priority is the health and well-being of our patients. Due to privacy requirements, we are unable to comment,” she said.
