Pneumonia: discover vaccination options against the disease

Pneumo 15 and Pneumo 23 are the options available to immunize against pneumonia, a disease that caused the death of over 44 thousand Brazilians in 2022

More than 44 thousand people have died from pneumonia in Brazil alone, between January and August 2022, indicates the Ministry of Health. In this context, measures to prevent and combat the disease are extremely valuable for public health, as is the case with vaccines.

Vaccines against pneumonia

The new product that has just arrived on the private vaccination network is the Pneumo 15 vaccine, for people from 6 weeks of age. It prevents meningitis, bacteremia (serious blood infection), pneumonia and acute otitis media, caused by 15 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus).

According to Cristiana Meirelles, pediatric infectious disease specialist, medical director of Beep Saúde, the new vaccine should be administered in 1 to 4 doses. This depends on the age group. The doctor emphasizes that the most common reactions in children aged 6 months to 2 years are irritability, drowsiness, fever, loss of appetite, pain and hardness at the application site. In older children, adolescents and adults, headache, myalgia and pain or swelling at the application site may occur.

Furthermore, after almost two years of unavailability on the private market, the pneumococcal vaccine 23 has returned to the private network. Protects against pneumonia, meningitis, bacteremia or septicemia caused by 23 types of Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcal) bacteria. “The vaccine is usually recommended for people over the age of 60, children over the age of 2, adolescents and, in addition, adults with conditions at risk of invasive pneumococcal diseases,” comments the infectious disease specialist.

Vaccination program

Understand the vaccination calendar with maximum protection, remembering the importance of always consulting your doctor:

  • For children older than 2 months, the recommendation is routine vaccination with Pneumo 13v or 15v (the number of doses needed will depend on the age of the person at the start of vaccination).
  • For people over 60 years of age, a regimen of Pneumo 13v or 15v is recommended, followed by Pneumo 23v (respecting the 6 to 12 month interval of the previous vaccine), plus another dose of Pneumo 23v, 5 years later .
