Learn more about the breast reconstruction procedure and how it can help boost self-esteem during and after breast cancer
Receiving a cancer diagnosis is devastating. And in the case of breast cancer, which is the second most common cancer among women in Brazil, there is yet another problem. Moreover, it strikes a fundamental point of female anatomy, often linked to female identity and sexuality: the breast.
Sometimes it is even necessary to remove the breast (or one of them) via mastectomy. This can cause self-esteem issues for these women. Therefore, it is common to undergo breast reconstruction surgery to restore the shape of the breast, which may occur with a mastectomy or later.
It was previously thought that performing both procedures at the same time could cause healing problems, but according to SBCP plastic surgeon Dr. Larissa Sumodjo, there is already evidence that this is not true. The only exception to this rule is older women who would not be able to withstand a longer surgery.
The importance of breast reconstruction
Mastectomy tends to compromise the self-esteem and emotional stability of those who undergo it, as well as causing pain and discomfort in the operated area, alterations in sensitivity and even compromising the upper limb on that side. In other words, in addition to the difficulties caused by any tumor, breast cancer also has specific factors that affect the patient.
In this sense it is important to minimize these difficulties by performing breast reconstruction together with mastectomy. “That’s why we feel so much empathy towards women who are going through breast cancer, because the context is already very difficult. Being able to achieve this exit situation with reconstructed and symmetrical breasts is extremely important.”
Many breast specialists and oncologists choose to perform immediate breast reconstruction. “But the intervention can also take place late, after the disease has remitted. This decision is made jointly between the doctor and the patient”, underlines the specialist.
How is breast reconstruction performed?
The technique used for breast reconstruction depends on several factors, such as the location of the tumor and the type of tumor resection. It can be made with the patient’s own tissues, with flaps from regions such as the back and abdomen, or with the use of prostheses and expanders.
The doctor reminds you that breast reconstruction is a multi-stage operation and, depending on the technique chosen, at least three operations may be necessary. Therefore, the patient must clarify all her doubts before undergoing the procedure. Studies indicating that more than 95% of procedures occur immediately after mastectomy and have satisfactory results.
Prevention is essential
We are still in Pink October, a period in which we talk about the importance of self-examination as a tool for early diagnosis of breast cancer. However, it is crucial to remember this throughout the year, as well as other actions that can help prevent the disease with lifestyle changes, such as:
- Regular practice of physical activity
- Eat healthy
- Not smoking
- Avoid being overweight
- Do not drink alcoholic beverages
- Avoid using synthetic hormones in high doses
