Exu Mirim: The true story of the being who nullifies magic and brings fulfillment

Discover what the true energy of Exu Mirim is like which, despite being mysterious and emblematic, helps us in our personal successes

I saw a guy sitting at the crossroads, I asked what happened, I asked what is he doing?…“. It’s his turn, Exu Mirim – this mysterious, emblematic and controversial figure, about whom much is said, but in reality little is known. These great workers in the terreiros where they work cancel negative magic, purify and help people in their personal achievements. They are children in name only, as they are experts and professionals in their work. So don’t let its size fool you. After all, this figure will win your heart with his simple, mischievous, sometimes grumpy, sometimes playful manner.

Exu Mirim, syncretism and the day of the week

Exu Mirim has syncretism with São Longuinho. After all, they are both short and very good at helping us find things, especially ourselves when we lose our essence and stray from the path of our heart. Having Saint Anthony next to Exu, the date of his celebration is very widespread. After all, some celebrate it on June 13 (date of the holy matchmaker), but in other places, on August 13. Its colors are black and red and the day of the week is Monday.

But who are the children?

It is very difficult to define or standardize what inhabits the realm of enchantment, poetry and the abstract. In some places, children – both Exu Mirim and Pomba-Gira Mirim – are Orixás, that is, cosmic and universal forces that act directly and indirectly in everyone’s life. They are entities that act in this vibration and are enchanted by nature, without ever going through carnal experience. In other cultures, they are spirits with earthly history and experience. However, one thing is certain: Exu Mirim is not the son of Exu and Pomba-Gira, nor are they marginalized children, who have used illicit things, committed crimes, lived on the streets and who have disincarnated – Pomba-Gira Mirim, therefore, does there are no barbarisms that speak of its origin.

The bad reputation…

It is true that, just like all other lines of Afro-Brazilian religions, the attacks against Exu Mirim are no different. Stories to scare or belittle these figures, associating them with diabolical beings who disappear with their objects, pull the tails of cats and dogs, cause accidents, perform negative magic to harm people’s lives or who lead children and adolescents to commit crimes. It is necessary to remember that there is no such thing as a “street child”, but children and people who live on the streets, abandoned by their families and hidden under the carpet by the State.

It is the truth!

Therefore Exu Mirim, on the contrary, becomes a figure representing awareness and struggle. Therefore, it is important to underline that religion is reconnecting with the divine: everything that is contrary to this is not religion and, therefore, has no relationship with these entities that in the terreiro are sacred and for which we admire, respect and feel affection . Their antics serve to bring us joy, axé, movement and energy – and, just like the erês, so that we never forget what it means to be a child and see life lightly, because it is with their laughter that Exu Mirim becomes the crossroads of life, of the sacred with the profane.
