Originally from South Africa, the desert Rose o Adenium belongs to the Apocynaceae family. The landscape designer Renata Guastelli comments that, in its natural environment, it can grow up to 4 meters in height, however, in houses and apartments it is, on average, between 20 and 40 centimeters.




Due to its slower growth, it can cost more than R$ 1,000.00! However, those interested in growing the flower can purchase young branches or plant from seeds.

Renata Guastelli explains that the The best pot for growing is one with good drainage and low edges. “It is important to prepare a good substrate. After preparing the soil, place it in the pot and add a plant in the center. It is essential that, when planting the seeds, they are planted at a distance distance of 10 cm. When the seedlings grow, you can move them to a separate pot.”

Lighting

The desert rose needs warmer temperatures, above 14º degrees and in a bright place.

Irrigation

“Do not add too much water, this will prevent drowning and rotting of the roots. The important thing is to keep the soil moist, so, to know when you need to water, check the soil,” says the landscape designer.

Pruning

According to Renata, pruning should be done weekly, to eliminate withered flowers and leaves. She stresses, however, that you need to wear gloves when handling the desert flower, as her sap is highly toxic.

The desert rose has a black color variation, which exists in nature and is native to South Africa. If grown properly, it can survive up to two decades!
