Silicone explant: understand why surgery is required

The plastic surgeon explains the reasons that could motivate more and more women to opt for the procedure

Some time ago this might have seemed unexpected, but today it is a reality: silicone explantation is an increasingly sought-after plastic surgery procedure. The fact is that celebrities like Rafa Brites, Victoria Beckham and Chrissy Teigen have decided to remove their breast implants in recent times.

Even more shocking are the numbers for the general population. According to the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP), there has been an increase of approx 20% on removal operations in 2021, compared to the previous year. But why is this trend occurring?

According to Ícaro Samuel, plastic surgeon member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, these are health problems. The fear for”silicone disease“, for example, is one of them. It is an autoimmune disease that can be induced by implants and this is why silicone explantation is chosen.

Furthermore, the search for a more natural look was also an important motivation. This trend has also appeared in the world of makeup.

Ícaro also explains that female empowerment could have to do with the increase in silicone explants. “Accepting the body as it is challenges the social pressure to conform to aesthetic standards,” says the expert.

In this sense, women are increasingly aware that their body is at the service of their own well-being and not of social expectations.

How does silicone explant work?

Silicone explantation is a procedure in which the entire prosthesis is removed, along with the capsule covering it. It can be performed using the existing scar of the implant and has few restrictions, it simply cannot be performed by people with health conditions that make the surgery risky.

With the explant it is also common to opt for mammoplasty. This involves the removal of part of the excess skin and the reshaping of the breast. This procedure is important because breasts may become saggy after silicone removal.

Post-operative recovery lasts approximately two weeks and it is necessary to follow all medical recommendations. Ícaro emphasizes that you need to carefully consider the pros and cons of the procedure, as well as seek qualified medical and psychological advice before making a decision.

This is because, although it is not a surgery with many risks, it can present some disadvantages. “Even with all available techniques such as intramuscular fat grafting and breast replacement, the patient will never again have as defined a cervix as before and the breasts will not return to their original shape. Additionally, the scars may become more visible at depending on the case”, warns the surgeon.
