Learn how to paint the walls of your home in 6 steps

Sika presents a series of recommendations so that you can carry out the procedure at home easily and safely

Repainting your home is a great way to transform the space and make it even more welcoming and modern. With the typical spring rains and the end of the year approaching, this is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of the mild climate and prepare your home for the holidays.

Although it may seem complicated, it is not impossible to do this job yourself, without having to incur additional expenses by hiring a professional in the sector. Sika, a company specializing in chemical products for construction and industry, therefore presents a series of important tips for learning how to paint walls correctly. Look down!

Prepare the environment

Before you start painting, you need to organize the area that will be renovated. To avoid the risk of damaging the furniture, cover it with tarpaulins, add newspaper around the walls to be painted, so that the paint does not drip directly onto the floor, and tape the corners, skirting boards, sockets and switches.

Sand the entire surface

-

In the case of walls with cracks and holes it is necessary to scrape the surface before applying the sealant and putty. For solid walls without excess plaster, use finer sandpaper, such as 220 or 240. For situations with more irregularities, use 80 or 100 sandpaper, which are thicker.

Waterproof and apply putty to the area

-

To prevent or treat moisture that causes peeling plaster, deterioration of paint, stains, mold and mildew, it is essential to waterproof the wall and apply stucco. “Sika has developed an easy to apply waterproofing system, which locks out moisture and also allows paint to be applied directly on site. The product pair consists of the Sika® Impermur waterproof primer base and the Sika MonoTop®-123 spackle waterproof primer baseboard,” indicates Emerson Bispo, technical coordinator at Sika.

Apply the first coat of paint

-

At this point it is essential to pay attention to the instructions included with the can of paint you choose, as there is different information on how to mix and dilute the paint evenly. Add the composition to a tray and use a wool roller to apply it. Try to avoid getting the roller soaked, use back and forth motions, and use a smaller brush to refine the edges.

Apply the second layer

-

In some cases, the wall requires a second layer of paint, to give more liveliness to the applied color. “Ideally, the next step should be done four hours after the first coat, so as not to remove the paint from its place and only add more pigmentation,” concludes the professional.

Finish the procedure

-

Before the paint dries completely, remove all the tape you used to protect baseboards, outlets and switches. Also, after four hours of drying, clean the floor and put the furniture back in its place.
