Criminals have one goal in mind: not to get caught. The lack of witnesses or evidence such as firearms, fingerprints or DNA at a crime scene can allow murderers and thieves to get away with crime. However, in some cases, the guilt over their actions becomes unbearable, leading them to finally confess to their crimes and provide the victims’ families with much-needed closure.
Here are six criminals who finally confessed to their crimes decades later.
1. Gary Ridgway
Gary Ridgway, known as the “Green River Killer”, was one of the most notorious serial killers in the United States. During the 1980s and 1990s, he committed at least 71 murders in the Seattle, Washington area, causing panic and eluding capture for years. In 2003 Ridgway surprised everyone by confessing to the murders and collaborating in the investigation in exchange for not applying the death penalty.
2. Teodoro Corrado

In 1969, Theodore Conrad stole $215,000 from the Society National Bank in Cleveland, Ohio, disappearing with the money. When he passed away, his family and friends believed he was dead. Years later, he took on a new identity as Thomas Randele in Boston, living a normal life. Only in 2021, on his deathbed, did Conrad confess to the robbery.
3. John Michael Irmer

In 1979, John Irmer assaulted and raped 24-year-old Susan Marcia Rose in an apartment building under renovation. Another man was wrongly accused of the crime and the case was dropped. However, in 2023, 44 years after the crime, Irmer confessed to Rose’s brutal murder. Based on his testimony and a DNA sample, he was ultimately charged with murder and aggravated rape.
4. David Zandstra

In 1975, David Zandstra beat eight-year-old Gretchen Harrington to death and dumped her body in Ridley Creek State Park. Although authorities knew he was the last to see her alive, Zandstra was not investigated. However, 48 years later, in 2023, he confessed to her murder, allowing authorities to finally solve the case and arrest him.
5.John Paul

In June 1980, Anthony Bird was found dead in his flat in Kensington Gardens Square. In 2021, after 41 years of inconclusive investigations, Giovanni Paolo confessed to the murder, admitting his involvement in a robbery during a sexual encounter, resulting in a conviction.
6. Karl Smith

In 2005, Kevin Dugar was sentenced to 54 years in prison for a 2003 shooting, despite maintaining his innocence. Ten years later, Karl Smith, his twin brother, confessed that he was responsible for the shooting. A new review led to Dugar’s release in January 2022 after nearly 20 years in prison.
Stories of criminals who eventually confessed to their crimes decades later highlight the lasting impact of guilt and morality. Even as technology advanced and cases went cold, a guilty conscience led these criminals to admit their terrible deeds. Their confessions not only provided the victims’ families with the closure they had long sought, but also served as a reminder that justice can, in fact, prevail, even after many years.
