Discover 4 lesser-known signs of anxiety

The problem can manifest itself in ways that sometimes take a long time to notice.

EINSTEIN AGENCY – Excessive worry and intense tension often mark the anxiety. “The person is never in the present,” summarizes Ana Paula Carvalho, coordinator of the Depression League at the Institute of Psychiatry of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of the USP (FMUSP). But the truth is that anxiety can manifest itself in other ways, which sometimes take a while to notice. Below we list the lesser-known signs of the condition.

Procrastination

Many people with anxiety are perfectionists. If a task doesn’t go as expected, they feel frustrated or irritated. “These people need to show the best of themselves, to assert themselves”, underlines psychologist Marilene Kehdi, specialist in clinical assistance and graduate in psychosomatics and psychopathology.

Precisely because they want to control the entire process and not accept any errors, they end up avoiding or procrastinating certain activities. “If the anxious person can’t do something perfect, they won’t even start,” reiterates Ana Paula. The problem is that putting off daily tasks creates even more anxiety.

An effective option to break this vicious cycle is to record your daily activities in a diary. Try, in a healthy way, to incorporate an organized routine that is more tolerant of possible failures.

Low self-esteem

Exaggerated demands on yourself are constant in the face of anxiety. It’s hard to even believe the praise received. This self-sabotage can also be confused with impostor syndrome, characterized by the belief that most of one’s daily accomplishments are not good enough.

The recommendation is to enhance your results and work on exaggerated perfectionism, with the help of psychotherapy.

Pessimism

Negative thoughts tend to take over anxious people. A work-related example: When it takes some time to receive a response about a certain task performed, more anxious individuals begin to imagine that their superior was not satisfied with the result.

One way to alleviate this feeling is to rationalize situations like the one described above, considering other possible and less pessimistic scenarios. Often the boss simply did not have time to respond due to other requests.

Lack of concentration

Excessive and pessimistic worries about the future distract attention from the present. This, in addition to generating stress, makes it difficult to assimilate new information.

Support from professionals helps to overcome the situation. Recording daily tasks in a diary is another good strategy, because it organizes the day and allows the individual to do one activity at a time.

“Also perform practices that reduce stress,” says Kehdi.

Physical symptoms of anxiety

  • Shortness of breath (shortness of breath)
  • Sweating
  • Trembling of hands and lips
  • Tachycardia
  • Sleep disorders
  • Stomach pain and heartburn

What is the best treatment?

Although the line of treatment depends on the type of anxiety, psychotherapy is commonly recommended. Sessions can last months or years.

At the same time, the patient can receive drugs to relieve anxiety attacks and make them less frequent. Only a doctor can define when it is necessary to invest in drugs and when to abandon them. Never start or stop this type of treatment on your own.

And rethinking your lifestyle is important. Physical exercise, good sleep, a balanced diet and the enhancement of relaxing practices are valuable measures.
