Bag, cropped, cropped: Men are breaking fashion standards in 2023

Small bags, crop tops, pelvic cutouts. Some fashion trends that look feminine have entered the wardrobe of fashion-conscious men. Agender style has been trending for some time, but in 2023, accessories and trends seen more in women’s looks have also appeared in celebrity productions and on the runways.

Actor and singer João Guilherme, actor Rodrigo Simas, singer Chris Chavez, of RBD, are some of the celebrities who show the trends without problems. Fashion consultant Arlindo Grund, a fan of wearing small bags, says it’s a way to reinforce a person’s style and break paradigms.

“The interesting thing is that fashion is constantly evolving and changing. From one moment to the next, maxi bags have given way to micro bags and are simply a reinforcement of our style, because if we think about size, there is only our patience and nothing else inside. In my bag I only carry a small eyedropper and an extra contact lens,” said Arlindo, who likes to wear bags that are the opposite of the style of the clothes she wears. “If I wear sportswear, I like to wear a more formal bag; if I use a more formal, more geometric bag, I prefer to use a more organic piece, with a wider shape, to create this counterpoint,” he explains.

He also believes that bags add an air of boldness to men’s looks. “That’s because we always think of a man with a utilitarian, more practical bag,” he said and added: “After all, we were the ones who gendered bags and, now, we’re seeing that they can be used by anyone.”

Cropped

Another trend that has attracted attention is short blouses for men. But Arlindo Grund reminds us that modeling is nothing new. “Men’s crop tops were very popular in the ’80s, coming from the world of sports. In the United States, it was very common for men to wear short sports shirts. And because fashion is cyclical, it’s back,” he explained, as demonstrated João Guilherme’s look (Above), like Shaw Mendes (under).

But, according to him, what is new for this new generation ends up becoming something unusual and even sparking controversy, even if it has already been experienced by other generations. “That’s why we now see several young people, from Generation Z, wearing crop tops or T-shirts,” he said.

Who would have thought that it was one of the costumes from the series “Fresh Prince of Bel Air”, starring Will Smith in the 90s could cause a lot of weirdness in the third decade of the 21st century, right?

Pelvic cutouts

The so-called pelvic cut, a trend that has been seen a lot among women and which leaves part of the hips or underwear exposed, has also had an impact on men’s looks, especially in fashion shows and shows, as the brand Bold recently demonstrated Strip, in the latest SPFW, and singer Chris Chavez in the shows that RBD made in Brazil, using some pieces of the Brazilian brand. She also opted for crop tops and cutouts in tops.

“It’s a way of transgressing, daring and provoking men’s fashion. After all, for years, the world of men’s fashion lived under constraints and strong concepts that ended up generating prejudices on the part of those who deviated a little from this formula pre-established since the times of capitalism and the beginning of the industrial era, when men’s clothing began to gain more strength”, added Arlindo Grund. And what do you think of these trends?
