Why do luxury car owners wrap their car keys in aluminum foil? The answer will surprise you!

Were you surprised to find that a respectable man, the owner of a good car, keeps his keys in an imprescribable piece of aluminum foil? This is not a superstition, but a kind of pressing necessity! Let’s explain what’s happening.

Car manufacturers are constantly inventing new technologies designed to make the life of car owners easier and as comfortable as possible. Some of these great features include the Smart Access System (KeyLess-Go, Advanced Key, Smart Entry). A car equipped with it allows, for example, to open a car door or start the engine without taking out the key. It is enough if it is somewhere nearby, in your pocket or bag.

The car owner presses a special button and the car sends a signal to a key equipped with a chip. The key sends the same electronic response and the system allows the doors to be unlocked or the engine to be started. Beauty and convenience!

However, as soon as the first lucky owners of cars equipped with KeyLess-Go began using their cars, one unfortunate thing became clear: the system was vulnerable. And attackers with special relay equipment can fake a “conversation” between the car and the key and take possession of an expensive vehicle.

Until now, manufacturers have not found a way to reliably protect the communication channel between the key and the car, so the “Kulibins” got down to business. Car enthusiasts have discovered that a simple piece of foil shields repeater requests and protects the key from virtual attempts by fraudsters.

So, a rich man who carefully wraps the key to his Mercedes in foil may seem funny, but he does not have to tear out his hair, styled at a hairdresser, upon discovering that the car has been stolen !
