Danger on New Year’s Eve: watch out for fireworks

In the last four years the SUS has recorded more than 1,500 hospital admissions due to pyrotechnic accidents; Don’t become part of the statistic

Fireworks are a New Year’s tradition, they enchant and welcome the new cycle that begins. But they don’t just cause colorful explosions in the sky, they can also be responsible for numerous problems.

As many know, fireworks that make noise annoy dogs, babies and autistic people. And that’s not all. Serious accidents can occur if they are not handled with due care.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, the SUS recorded 1,548 hospitalizations for fireworks-related injuries between 2019 and 2022. In 2023, preliminary information indicates that there have already been 266 such hospitalizations from January to September.

As the end of the year approaches, you need to understand the risks and know how to prevent this number from growing so much.

Dangers of fireworks

Accidents can occur with fireworks when they explode prematurely, due to manufacturing defects or incorrect use.

The hands are usually the most affected parts. In addition to burns, those affected can suffer injuries with lacerations, cuts and even amputations of limbs.

“The anatomy of the hands is complex, since it is composed of nerves, vessels, tendons, bones and ligaments that can be damaged by explosion and heat together with the skin,” explains the president of the Brazilian Society of Hand Surgery (SBCM) ), Antonio Tufi Neder Filho.

In this type of accident, other areas are also at risk, such as the face and arms.

In case of burns, the president of the SBCM underlines that it is necessary to wash the area with running water or saline solution, bandage it with a clean handkerchief and seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

Do not use home remedies as they may make the situation worse. When trauma with bleeding occurs, the recommendation is to compress the area with a cloth and contact a health service.

How to avoid problems?

The main advice to prevent these problems is to activate the device using a stand and in an open space, without ever holding it directly in your hands or bringing it close to your face. “You need to pay double attention to children, always keeping them away from the area”, underlines Antonio.

Another point is to avoid using homemade materials, purchasing fireworks exclusively from specialized factories. Also, read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. “Also make sure that there are no combustible materials nearby. Never reuse the material, even if it did not cause the desired explosion”, concludes the expert.
