The Military Police shock troops must contain the confusion; in-person voting is halted

In the week the club was relegated for the first time, tension surrounds Santos’ presidential elections. The elections took place without major disturbances until organized supporters of the club attempted to invade the voting location, the Athié Jorge Cury gym, in Vila Belmiro. There was confusion and the riot squad of the Military Police had to intervene.

It was around 2.15pm when uniformed fans forcibly opened one of the gym gates. A team of security guards contained the advance of those attempting to invade. The fans wanted to reach the current president, Andres Rueda, and the president of the Deliberative Council, Celso Jatene. Moments before the commotion broke out, Jatene tried to speak to some members of the crowd. However, they cursed and threatened the leader.

The group was then removed from the gym area where they were located. However, a short time later, the fans returned, trying to open the gate and advance. In-person voting was halted, but has now resumed.
