The use of sunscreen increases, but the rate of skin cancer also increases

The study showed that people use sunscreen as a “permission” to tan, spending hours in direct exposure

Sunscreen is a universal prescription in the world of dermatology. Capable of protecting the skin from the harmful effects of UV rays, which include photoaging and blemishes, this product is also indicated for minimizing the risk of skin cancer.

But why doesn’t greater adherence to the use of this product curb the rates of melanoma and other skin cancers? And since the incidence of this type of cancer is increasing, what’s not to like?

“This has been called the sunscreen paradox. People are embracing using the product and that’s great. But they think sunscreen gives you permission to spend hours directly exposed to the sun. In many cases they don’t even reapply the product”, explains Danilo S. Talarico, medical specialist in Clinical-Surgical Dermatology and teacher in the courses of Dermatology, Trichology, Hair Transplant (Hair Surgery) and Aesthetic Medicine.

“In addition, we have three other possible reasons: a predominance of outdoor occupations resulting in higher levels of sun exposure; a culture of involvement in outdoor hobbies/activities; and warmer temperatures increasing UV exposure “, explains.

The data cannot discourage use

The doctor highlights a recent study, published on Cancers who have addressed this topic in Canada.

“These data should in no way discourage the use of sunscreen and should not compromise or discredit its effectiveness. But they serve as a warning to demonstrate that measures other than sun protection are necessary,” warns the doctor.

According to the National Cancer Institute (INCA), in Brazil the estimated number of new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer, for each year of the three-year period from 2023 to 2025, is 220,490, and women are the major victims (118,570 cases ). ).

“Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common in the country. In men it is more frequent in the South, South-East and Central-West regions. As for women, non-melanoma skin cancer is more common in all Brazilian regions,” says the doctor.

Melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer, is a form of skin cancer that can be prevented by limiting sun exposure, according to Danilo. The estimated number of new cases, according to INCA, is 8,980, but, as regards melanoma, the main victims are men (4,640).

A question of interpretation

The study revealed that in the sun protection paradox there are errors of interpretation on the part of most people. “In general, patients do not apply enough sunscreen or stay in the sun for hours after applying sunscreen in the morning. This gives a false sense of security,” explains Danilo S. Talarico.

In the study, researchers found that Canadians living in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island – provinces with high incidence rates of melanoma – were more likely to report using sunscreen, more aware of the risks of exposure in the sun for the health of melanoma and more capable of doing so. follow the protection recommendations.

Despite this, they also received increased sun exposure due to warmer temperatures and a tendency to engage in outdoor activities.

“The study also showed that people with higher levels of sun exposure also tend to use more, but not adequate, amounts of sunscreen or other sun protection measures, providing another false sense of security.”

Also according to Danilo it is necessary to exercise moderation when exposing yourself to the sun. “People can and should enjoy the outdoors, but without getting sunburned or tanned. For this reason, the use of sunscreen is recommended. It must be a product with at least SPF 30 and must be reapplied every two hours – and every time you go out to sea. Accessories such as caps, hats, glasses, UV protective clothing should also be used. But the most important thing is to avoid excessive and direct exposure,” concludes the doctor.
