The neuroscientist goes viral when he explains that that gesture makes people more impulsive and leads them to spend more
Have you become a fan of that restaurant that pampered you at the entrance by offering you special breads and the waiter suggested you order your favorite alcoholic drink?
If you have already returned to the place and recommended it to your friends, it is a sign that the strategy worked! Neuroscientist Daniel Amen went viral on social media when he explained that these services affect the brain and push people to consume more, as they become more impulsive.
Both bread and alcohol release serotonin in the brain, making customers feel pleasant.
Serotonin declines after a while, leaving people seeking that pleasant, full feeling of more food, which drives them to consume more of it.
“When you go to a restaurant, the first thing they do is put bread on the table and ask if you want alcohol, because both lower the frontal lobes. Both make you more likely to order more and spend more money at restaurants,” Amen said.
“Bread causes a spike in blood sugar which then pushes serotonin into the brain and makes you happy,” adds the professional.
As the sugar spike decreases, the person becomes hungrier and demands more food. Consuming alcohol has the same effect.
Therefore, hospitality is a great strategy to make the customer feel well taken care of and spend more.
