“New Ground” is a co-housing project in the United Kingdom that does not accept men; in total there are 25 apartments and 26 residents (there is a couple)
Imagine growing old with your friends? Because in London it is already possible. The project “New terrain” is a type of “condominium” that only accepts women over 50. Located in a suburb of London, the place was created as an alternative to nursing homes and nursing homes.
There the residents each live in their own “house”, in total there are 25 apartments and 26 residents (there is a couple); “co-housing” – as this type of collective house is called – also has a garden, laundry room, meeting room (which hosts dinners, movie nights and yoga classes) and guest suites.
New Ground’s values are:
- Acceptance and respect for diversity;
- Take care and support each other;
- Balance between privacy and community;
- Fighting harmful stereotypes;
- Cooperation and sharing of responsibilities;
- Maintain a non-hierarchical structure
- Attention to the environment;
- Community.
Humans are welcome in space, but cannot live in the “New Ground”. “We have siblings, parents, children, grandchildren, lovers and everything in between. The only thing is, they can’t come and live here,” resident Jude Tisdall, 71, explained in an interview with The Guardian. If someone has a boyfriend and asks to sleep over, Tisdall offers the solution: “It would be a great excuse to say, ‘I’m sorry, honey. I can’t live with you, but we can spend wonderful weekends together!”

Volunteers are also welcome in the space. Residents are divided to take care of maintenance, gardening, cleaning, legal matters and communication of the space.
Of course, those who require special care or healthcare professionals continue to receive appropriate professional help. Residents are between 58 and 94 years old. Some own the apartments, others just rent them. There is no similar model yet in Brazil.
