The “New York Times” ranking cites the reopening of the city’s historic monuments
The Federal Capital of Brazil occupies 32nd place in the newspaper’s ranking”The New York Times” on the best destinations to visit in 2024. “Brasília, Brazil’s capital since 1960, is often overshadowed by more extravagant destinations such as Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. But Brasilia is a planned city, famous for its white, futuristic and modernist buildings,” the publication reads.
The American newspaper highlights the reopening of the city’s architectural “jewels” – citing some of the main monuments of the plateau as examples. The ranking mentions, for example, that the Palácio da Alvorada, official residence of the President of the Republic, will be reopened for visits. Furthermore, the ranking reminds us that the protective barriers that until recently surrounded the Palácio do Planalto, the seat of executive power, have been removed.
“Planalto was one of the government buildings invaded last year by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Its greater accessibility signals a return to the original vision of architects Oscar Niemeyer and Lúcio Costa, of an open and integrated city,” writes journalist Paulo Motoryn.
The chart has tours
The ranking doesn’t just focus on cities. The list of 51 entries also contains suggestions on places, itineraries and events that deserve special attention this year. The first, for example, is the path of the Moon’s shadow on the Earth’s surface, which will cross 13 North American states during a total solar eclipse.
