The architect explains that they do not require periodic maintenance and are perfect for those who do not have time to take care of natural species

Preserved plants, which go through a chemical process that ensures their durability, were already popular in corporate projects, but are now invading Brazilian homes too. The combination of the desire for natural greenery and attractive durability makes this foliage a growing choice.

Architect Marta Martins, understanding her clients’ lack of time, adopts these plants in her residential projects, offering beauty without the need for intensive care, a practical and elegant solution.

To explore the concept of biophilia, look to use stabilized plants as a way to ensure the freshness and benefits that nature adds to interior designs, but always respecting one’s preferences, desires and domestic needs. “We evaluate very carefully to define the typologies of installations and how it is displayed, whether in pots or in vertical gardens”, explains the professional.

How are stabilized plants composed?

The transformation occurs when natural foliage is subjected to a chemical process that preserves its consistency and integrity. “It’s as if they were padded,” explains the professional. This activity is manual, technological and carried out by specialized professionals who take care to guarantee the original appearance. As a final phase they are then sent to drying and dyeing.

When to use these plants

Greenery in itself creates a perception of tranquility in the environment and, consequently, in the residents. However, he reports that, in addition to lack of time for care, other factors support the adoption of stabilized plants.

“We went through some restrictions, such as the impossibility of adhering to natural foliage due to condominium constraints or the lack of facilities for ventilation or lighting,” explains Marta. “In these moments they are very welcome,” she adds.

Versatility and aesthetics

Among the possibilities to be explored, larger spaces allow the creation of vertical gardens that influence both the aesthetics and the resolution of the acoustic problems of the area. “In projects with double-height ceilings, I really like to consider the species present in the rooms [de estar, TV] and integrated balconies. I believe in this combination of biophilia and well-being”, reinforces the architect.

Advantages of stabilized plants

Stabilized plants do not require periodic maintenance and are perfect for those who don’t have time to do it take care of natural species. But the advantages don’t end there:

  • Exemption from irrigation, pruning, fertilization and exposure to the sun
  • Free of unwanted insects
  • High durability
  • Excessive noise absorption
  • Versatility (being tailor-made it can include other plant species and colours)
  • Resistant to temperature variations and air conditioning

Preserved plants are ideal for use in covered outdoor environments, as they demonstrate resistance to temperature changes

Maintenance and durability

Although they do not require periodic maintenance, some tips cannot be forgotten if the goal is to keep them beautiful. In the daily life of the house, the resident is advised to do a superficial cleaning, with a duster and delicate movements, to remove excess dust.

In the long term, over the course of one or two years, it is advisable for the resident to hire a specialized team for cleaning and, if necessary, carry out partial replacement of some branches or a new dye. “The idea is always to maintain the existing structure, as long as there is no significant damage”, analyzes the architect.

However, he points out that if the installation of preserved plants occurs in a high traffic area, constant contact by people can cause cracks that damage its appearance. “In these cases it is quite possible that the recovery will have to take place in a shorter period of time,” she assesses.

Caution: Preserved species should not be wetted under any circumstances, as water causes discoloration and mold. Furthermore, excessive exposure to the sun also causes the foliage to change color.

Use in decoration

Preserved plants are very democratic, and the predominantly green color generates a cheerful, casual and inviting atmosphere that goes very well alone or accompanied by coverings, wallpapers, paintings or textures. “The premise is always to work for harmony between the elements”, advises the architect.

Among the most requested species, Marta points out that the maidenhair fern is a ‘darling’ of construction projects. landscape, as it presents excellent results thanks to the volume. For use in vases, boxwoods, phoenix or areca palms, cica and even some types of podocarpus are highly appreciated.
