The follower says that she has already changed pills and has noticed that she is gaining a lot of weight
Doctor, I take contraceptives because of polycystic ovaries. I’ve already changed it once and have been using it for a while. But for some time now I have gained a lot of weight, even though I eat little. Since I was little I tend to gain weight easily. Could it be related to contraceptives or something else?
You say that since you were little you had a tendency to gain weight. Perhaps the first thing to check is physical activity and food intake. Even if you eat little, are you eating correctly, with the foods best suited to your metabolism?
Polycystic ovaries can lead to weight gain due to hormonal changes, as well as acne and increased hair growth. You should check with your gynecologist whether the pill you are using adequately controls polycystic ovaries. Certain types of pills can cause some girls to have increased fluid retention.
Taking all this into consideration is important, which is why I recommend a good conversation with your gynecologist.

Causes and symptoms of PCOS
Polycystic ovary syndrome is a disease characterized by increased production of male hormones, which can have consequences on quality of life and health. It’s a situation that can happen to many women and lead to a hormonal imbalance, affecting the frequency of menstruation and ovulation, making it difficult to lose weight and causing oilier skin and more hair.
According to the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations (Febrasgo), 6% to 16% of women of childbearing age can develop the dysfunction, with a prevalence that varies depending on the population studied and the diagnostic criteria used.
The cause is not yet clear and varies from woman to woman. For experts, the reason for its appearance could be linked to genetic and environmental factors. In addition to the symptoms mentioned above, the syndrome also manifests itself through:
- Presence of numerous small cysts on the woman’s ovaries;
- Acne;
- Mood changes;
- Problems with sleep;
- Depression and anxiety;
- Dark areas on the skin of the armpits, neck and in the creases of the fingers and/or elbows.
Since it is a condition with different symptoms, treatment must be personalized and will depend on the signs each woman presents, as well as her goal, for example whether or not she wants to become pregnant.
One of the main consequences of PCOS is difficulty getting pregnant, but it can also increase the risk of other problems, such as endometrial cancer (cancer on the inside wall of the uterus), diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The recommendation is to consult a gynecologist for evaluation and possibly treatment. In any case, although a woman with PCOS may have more difficulty getting pregnant, it is possible – and therefore it is also important to be careful during sexual intercourse.
