The new study analyzed the effects of 6-MSITC (6-methylsulfinhexyl isothiocyanate), the main bioactive component of wasabi, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The research analyzed more than seventy elderly people over the age of 60 for 12 weeks. Researchers observed abilities such as executive function, memory, attention, and processing speed after using the supplement.
Among the cognitive benefits noted, the improvement in memory was one of the most significant, especially in working and episodic memory. However, the study did not identify improvements in areas such as attention or processing speed, nor did it delve into the biological mechanisms that generated the improvements. Despite this, there are hypotheses about antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions.
Further studies are needed
According to Dr. Fabiano de Abreu Agrela, a postdoctoral researcher in neuroscience and member of the Royal Society of Biology in the United Kingdom, the study is important because it presents a new perspective on the seasoning, drawing attention to a possible new agent for the treatment of decline cognitive, but it is still poor.
