Activating the senses when eating increases the feeling of satiety; understand how to practice
Eating so quickly – as we are used to doing – is a process opposite to the one proposed Conscious Eating. Therefore, Mindful Eating reduces binge eating.
This is because paying more attention to food before eating it increases the flavors of the food, promoting greater satiety.
Therefore, by changing your attitude towards food, the chances of development increase binge decrease, as the brain begins to respond with the release of pleasure hormones.
Conscious Eating in practice
How can we make this change and practice conscious consumption in a simple way?
- More than looking at food, we can observe it, perceive its colours, shapes and textures.
- We can bring the delicacy closer to our nostrils, close our eyes and absorb the aroma it spreads.
- If food is tangible, how about exploring its touch and detecting its softness or roughness?
- Maybe even listen to the noises that this process is capable of generating.
How to use Mindful Eating to reduce binge eating
In my clinical experiences with patients, I emphasize to them the relevance of sensory activation.
It’s the moment when we have to start relating to the food in front of us, regardless of what it is (a snack, a meal, a drink).
During activation – the moment before eating – our senses become more aware, ensuring a more enjoyable and satiating meal.
Sensory activation consists of awakening the sensory spectrum to refine the palate and generate more satiety. If you connect sight, smell, hearing and touch more deeply, together they provide a tastier meal.
When we activate the senses, we send information to the brain, which releases chemical mediators of hedonism (happiness) and pleasure in the body.
Together, these processes minimize possible episodes of compulsive eating and eating disorders. emotional or psychological hunger (eating without physiological need).

But why do we eat too quickly?
In attempting to answer the above question, we are faced with a historical question of survival. In ancient times, man ate food quickly, because he was afraid that other villages might steal his food!
Analyzing the historical context up to the present day, however, we can conclude that the danger of food theft is practically non-existent today.
Today there are other factors that generate this rush to eat, inherent in the human species, such as: stress, hunger itself and our own mental programming, which transmits the information that we should eat quickly to have more time to eat. activity.
Therefore, when trying to “pull the brakes” to consume a more complete and pleasant meal, we apply the principles of Mindful Eating, also known as Mindful Eating.
The technique is based on the precepts of Awarenessdirecting them specifically towards food.
