In the far north of Rio Grande do Norte, between Areia Branca and Porto do Mangue, an arid and ever-changing landscape brings a breath of fresh air to tourism in Rio Grande do Norte.

250 km from the capital Natal, this APA (Environmental Protection Area) of over 16.5 thousand hectares is a sequence of colored mountains, formed by the sediments of the nearby cliffs, brought by constant winds.

Although it is considered the largest set of dunes in the state, the attraction is still unknown to Rio Grande do Sul tourism, which can be combined with coastal itineraries in Ponta do Mel, a village in the municipality of Areia Branca.

The lack of interest in the region is due to two factors: the great distance from the most popular tourist destinations of Rio Grande do Norte – the dunes are closer to Ceará than to São Miguel do Gostoso, 200 kilometers away – and (correct) prohibition of circulation of strollers on site. Not to mention the little infrastructure offered.

Therefore, the only way to visit Rosado is to walk along the soft sand of the park. However, it is very easy to get lost in that confusing sea of sand, which is why it is essential to have a guide, who can be hired at the park entrance.

Plan to visit the attraction in the morning or late afternoon to see the incidence of sunlight that gives different contours to those sandy mountains.

HOW TO GET TO THE ROSADO DUNES

Between the sea and the hinterland, the region is accessible via the BR-101 to Igapó and the BR-406, towards Macau, from where you take the RN-118 to the RN-404. Nearby destinations such as the municipality of Porto do Mangue and the village of Ponta do Mel, in Areia Branca, serve as a base for those visiting the place.

The dunes are part of the Costa Branca Complex, Brazil’s largest salt producer, and can also be combined with Galinhos, a sandy peninsula, 170 km from Natal.

The hinterland will turn into the sea

Rosado also shares the territory with Areia Branca, the municipality that hosts Ponta do Mel, a beach that sees the sea transform into the hinterland, with high cliffs and cacti overlooking this extended strip of sand.

Tourism at the Costa Branca Polo is still discreet and was born as an intermediate stop for those making long crossings off roadbetween Natal and Fortaleza, passing through Canoa Quebrada in Ceará.

In Rio Grande do Norte, it is not uncommon to see mini expeditions with tourists traveling on the sand, aboard a Land Rover, from São Miguel do Gostoso to Galinhos, with stops in Praia de Touros, Galos, Ponta do Mel and Dunas do Rosado Another popular route follows west, towards Canoa Quebrada and Fortaleza, both in Ceará.
