Pregnancy loss: How soon is it safe to try again?

Every year approximately 23 million women worldwide suffer a miscarriage; the doctor clarifies when it is possible to try again

One pregnancy loss It is a very delicate moment in the life of every woman who wants to become a mother and sees her dream interrupted. However, it is necessary to talk about this topic, since miscarriages are more common than we think: around 23 million per year worldwide.

According to gynecologist and obstetrician Luiz Fernando Pina, the most frequent spontaneous abortion in the population occurs up to the 12th week of gestation and there are some conditions that favor the termination of pregnancy. “Thrombophilia, chromosomal alterations and genetic diseases are identified as possible factors in miscarriage,” he explains.

And since many women continue to want to try for a child after pregnancy loss (these babies are also called “rainbow babies”), this is one of the topics that needs a lot of clarification. It is necessary wait a certain period of time before trying to get pregnant again, both for the physical and mental health of women. How much?

According to Pina, a specialist in human reproduction and endometriosis, the safe period to wait is at least six months. This is if the woman has recovered physically and psychologically, otherwise it may be necessary to wait longer.

Recovery and prevention

Theoretically, about fifteen days after an abortion, it is already possible to get pregnant. However, this is not recommended precisely because the woman needs to undergo a recovery process. “It takes time to recover essential iron and vitamins for the body to be ready to conceive. After all, healthy bodies contribute to healthy pregnancies,” she concludes.

Pina, who is also the founder of the Baby Center Reproductive Medicine clinic, also emphasizes that waiting is essential for women to understand if they risk, for example, suffering from post-loss depression. For all these reasons, prevention and the use of contraceptive methods in the first months after abortion are essential.

Finally, in case of repeated miscarriages, it is essential to seek help from a human reproduction specialist. “One pregnancy loss can be normal. More than one is the subject of more in-depth investigations, not only for the patient, but also for the couple”, concludes Dr. Luiz.
