Even if many people schedule operations in winter, the proximity of summer also increases the demand for liposuction, a plastic surgery operation that has evolved over time and which today is not only based on the removal of localized fat, but on the suction of strategic points to highlight the ‘six pack’ – and also the use of other techniques to promote muscle growth.
This is why lipo is the most performed surgery in the world, according to data from the International Society of Plastic Surgery.
“Liposuction essentially consists of collecting excess fat through a cannula connected to a suction device. Fat aspiration can be performed in different regions, such as: abdomen, back, arms and legs,” explains plastic surgeon Luiz Carlos Carvalho, member of the Brazilian Association of Plastic Surgery (BAPS).
And, for those looking to undergo liposuction, the good news is that, thanks to technological advances, liposuction is no longer the extremely invasive procedure that many imagine. A significant advance in liposuction has been, for example, in the way fat is manipulated.
“In ultrasonic liposuction, for example, a device is used that emits vibration waves that emulsify the fat, but preserve nearby tissues and reduce blood loss,” underlines Luiz Carlos.
The doctor also explains that today there are various combined techniques and technologies that allow the adoption of numerous protocols.
“A problem that often accompanies localized fat is sagging skin. So, one of the treatment options is to perform a plasma jet after the end of liposuction. This device promotes the reorganization of collagen fibers through controlled heating and cooling of the tissues,” adds the plastic surgeon.
Emphasize that everything depends on the recommendation of the plastic surgeon after a medical consultation.
New techniques, new possibilities
Liposuction techniques also offer new possibilities beyond simply removing localized fat. A great innovation in this sense is the procedure known as Lipo HD (High Definition) or Lipo LAD (High Definition Liposuction), an advancement of the conventional technique based on the reinforced aspiration of localized fat deposits that hide muscle definition.
The most recent evolution of liposuction is the UGraft technique which, with the aid of fat grafting into the muscle layer, has allowed the selective and personalized enlargement of the muscular compartments of the abdomen, reducing the need for superficial liposuction and, consequence, irregularities, fibrosis and alterations of the skin. . In addition to the abdomen, the surgery can also be performed on the deltoid (shoulder), pectoral, biceps and triceps muscles.
“With this technique, muscle areas that were previously inaccessible can now have better definition. And even patients who do not have very developed muscles can now obtain a more natural aesthetic result,” says Luiz Carlos.
It is worth noting that the patient’s own fat is not rejected when applied to another region of the body, so its applications are varied.
Finally, BAPS advises that, although these advances have ensured greater safety and efficiency in liposuction, it is still essential that the procedure is performed by an experienced and properly certified plastic surgeon to avoid complications.
“To avoid putting your health at risk, good advice is to check if the professional has an RQE, which is the qualification record for the specialty,” advises Luiz Carlos.
Furthermore, it is worth investigating the doctor’s social networks, evaluating his posture and positioning, improvements, updates, courses and sharing experiences with former patients. And with the recent changes by the Federal Council of Medicine (FMC) regarding medical advertising, doctors will soon also be able to publish “before and after” photos and show their daily work on social media, something that BAPS has supported since its creation, in 2022.
«So pay attention to the professional’s social networks before choosing them to perform an operation, but don’t rely on the number of followers and likes», concludes the doctor.
