Ilhéus and Rio are among the locations of the telenovela […]
Three decades after its original airing, ‘Renascer’ gets a new version, at 9 p.m. TVGlobo.
The story of José Inocêncio (Humberto Carrão/Marcos Palmeira), with its mysteries, dramas, legends and revenge, will debut this Monday, January 22 and, just like in 1993, will have Ilhéus as its main setting.
In the fields of this municipality of Bahia, just over 300 kilometers to the north safe harboryoung José Inocêncio builds a cocoa empire, but has had a difficult relationship with his youngest son, João Pedro (Juan Paiva), since his birth.
In addition to the leading duo, the cast will also include Juliana Paes, Sophie Charlotte, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Antônio Calloni, Vladimir Brichta, Irandhir Santos, Enrique Diaz, Almir and Gabriel Sater, among other artists.
Based on the work of Benedito Ruy Barbosa and with the artistic direction of Gustavo Fernandez, the remake was written by Bruno Luperi, nephew of the author of the original work, responsible for the latest version of Pantanal.
Ilheus
Filming in the city began in October last year and lasted three weeks, during which around 200 professionals recorded the scenes that will be seen in the two phases of the telenovela.
Among the addresses chosen to set the story are the historic center of Ilhéus, such as the traditional Vesúvio restaurant and the Casa de Cultura Jorge Amado.
Opened in 1919, the Vesúvio restaurant is one of the oldest places in the city and became famous for the love story between the characters Nacib and Gabriela, in the opera “Gabriela, Cravo and Canela”, by Jorge Amado.

Another central address that will be present in the plot is the Casa de Cultura Jorge Amado, a villa from the late 1920s, where the Bahian writer spent his childhood and adolescence, currently a cultural center with a collection of clothes and photographs.
In an area of 600 m², the neoclassical style building has five-meter high ceilings, rosewood floors and English tiles on the balcony.
Três Picos State Park
(Macacu Falls, Rio de Janeiro)
This park in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, which includes other municipalities such as Teresópolis and Nova Friburgo, is the scene of one of the most emblematic moments of ‘Renascer’.
It is there that the actor Humberto Carrão recorded the scene of the first phase of the telenovela, in which his character José Inocêncio takes the oath, planting his machete at the feet of a jequitibá-rei.
“As long as my machete remains stuck at your feet, neither you nor I will die… not by a killed death… not by a dead death!”, the character promises.
The sequence was directed by Gustavo Fernandez, artistic director, and will soon be in its debut chapter.

Spring Farm
(Ilhéus, Bahia)
As in the 1993 version, this farm in southern Bahia is once again the protagonist.
Also known as Fazenda Renascer, this historic structure which hosted the characters of Antônio Fagundes, Marcos Palmeira and Adriana Esteves, in the first version of the telenovela, has been managed by the same family since the beginning of the 19th century.
After the devastating witches’ broom attack on cocoa plantations in the 1980s, the farm began to focus on tourism activities and currently has rural tourism as one of its main sources of income, with activities such as guided tours and trips in a carriage.
Indeed, the disease will be a thorn in the side (or would it be a thorn in the side?) of the new character Cândida, played by the actress Maria Fernanda Cândido, who returns to soap operas.

In the first phase of the plot, the actress will play this widow and owner of a farm on the verge of bankruptcy due to the plague that destroyed the cocoa plantations. Her character will welcome the young José Inocêncio (Humberto Carrão), when he is left on his property between life and death by the “Turk” Rachid (Gabriel Sater), before founding his empire.
In Uruçuca, scenes were filmed in the plantations of José Inocêncio (Marcos Palmeira), in the second phase of the telenovela, with the actors Juan Paiva, Theresa Fonseca, Jackson Antunes, Samantha Jones, Xamã, Marcello Melo Jr and Rodrigo Simas.
The sequences were made in a place that adopts cabruca, a cocoa management and planting technique, and agroforestry system for cocoa production, which consists of different plant species in the same area and contributes to the environment.
In a statement, TV Globo reported that, unlike the first version, the remake will introduce other ways of managing cocoa, “more focused on caring for the land and the environment, as well as new ways to obtain more refined products from cocoa”.
Enchanted Lagoon
(34 km from Ilhéus)
The rural sector of Ilhéus saw artists such as Humberto Carrão, Duda Santos, Adanilo, Evaldo Macarrão, Antonio Calloni and Enrique Diaz, who play characters from the first phase of the plot, as well as Edvana Carvalho, Inácia, in both phases.
One of the highlights is Lagoa Encantada, a large 15 km² body of water, an environmental protection area known for its floating islands.
Another scenario was the Véu da Noiva waterfall, which also tells the story of the young José Inocêncio and his companions Deocleciano (Adanilo) and Jupará (Evaldo Macarrão) with the load of cocoa bags.

Bahia Rio
Although the initial scenes were recorded in Terra do Cacau, as Ilhéus is known, the plot will develop with recordings in picturesque cities, in Rio de Janeiro, and in two other trips that the production will have to undertake, in Bahia.
“A work that enriches our history and presents to Brazil and the world, through the small screen, all the beauties of the land of cocoa and chocolate”, declared the mayor of Ilhéus, Mário Alexandre, in a statement.
Designed by Fábio Rangel, the ‘Renascer’ set will feature three scenic cities at Estúdios Globo, Rio de Janeiro.
The first, of three thousand m2, will represent the silk of Fazenda Jequitibá Rei, the second (2,100 m2) will be an annex to the cocoa headquarters and workplace, including barges, wooden structures for drying cocoa.
A third scenic city of 6,400 m² will reproduce a village of Ilhéus, where Norberto’s shop (Matheus Nachtergaele) and the famous Jacutinga house, setting by Juliana Paes, will be located.
As reported in the Play section, in the January 19 edition of the newspaper O Globo, the production ordered approximately one ton of cocoa, transported by truck to the scenes filmed at Estúdios Globo, in Rio de Janeiro.

Telenovela on air
Among the promotional actions of ‘Renascer’, TV Globo had three characters from the plot attack an Embraer E1 of the Azul fleet. Over the next three months of the campaign, the characters José Inocêncio (Marcos Palmeira), Mariana (Theresa Fonseca) and João Pedro (Juan Paiva) will fly on the airline’s domestic routes.
In addition to the sticker, this new action, according to Eduardo Pinto, marketing analyst of the channel, will also offer an immersive experience on board, with images and scenes that allude to the soap opera inside the Embraer, such as in the luggage compartment and in the bathrooms.
