A simple fundamental detail to start the change towards a healthier life
When it comes to improving the quality of our food, we often get lost without understanding the real difference between foods. To this end, knowing what is “processed” and “ultra-processed” is essential to initiating this change.
“Processed” foods are those that undergo some type of manipulation, but which still maintain their real characteristics. I’ll use ham as an example. The Royale is basically pork shank, boneless, super seasoned and cooked. The skin and fat are preserved and when cut you can see the grain of the meat. At this stage, seasonings and some preservatives are included in the food. These are generally substances already present in foods. Another processed product is canned corn, it is cooked in salted water and then stored in a can. This food has simply been transformed.
“Ultra processed” foods are those that are seen as bad in our diet, they have high levels of preservatives, colors and fats which are not good for our health. Cooked ham is an example of this, obtained from meat scraps, colorings and preservatives. The food no longer has its original shape and becomes a large block to be sliced.
Finding balance in your diet is a real daily challenge, avoiding the consumption of soft drinks and fruit juices, choosing to “unpack” food less and peel it more is an excellent way to eat healthy.
