Consuming antioxidants may reduce the risk of low back pain

Women who ingest high amounts of antioxidants may be better protected

According to a recent study published in the journal BMC Public Health, consuming antioxidant-rich foods can help prevent low back pain.

Antioxidants are substances found in foods such as fruit and vegetables, which help stop a process called oxidation, i.e. the formation of free radicals that can cause damage to cells. Therefore, these compounds help protect cells from damage.

The researchers analyzed data from previous studies that supported the idea that oxidative stress can worsen low back pain. To investigate what this might look like in practical application, they included 17,682 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the United States.

The results showed that female participants who had a high level of antioxidant intake were almost 12 percent less likely to experience lower back pain than those with the lowest antioxidant intake.

According to the World Health Organization, there were approximately 619 million cases of low back pain worldwide in 2020 alone, and back problems are a major cause of disability.
