Since 2011, the ‘European Tree of the Year’ competition has chosen the most beautiful tree in the Old Continent from around 16 participating countries.

With more than 45 thousand popular votes, the latest winner of the title was this unusual oak, from Łódź in central Poland, a dutiful gentleman who has stood for 150 to 200 years.

Without a doubt it is one of the most unique trees, not only in Poland, but in the whole world. And the numbers, as well as the design, are impressive.

Located in Klepacza Park, at the city’s University of Technology, and declared a Polish natural monument since 1990, this Fabrykant oak has one of its S-shaped branches, over 20 meters long.

It is 22 meters tall, has a trunk of 4.5 meters in circumference and a crown over 33 meters wide.

It is no coincidence that the specimen is considered the “king of Łódź oaks”, according to the definition of Professor Jan Siciński of the University of Łódź.

The context Tree of the year (“Tree of the Year,” in Portuguese) was created in the Czech Republic in 2002 and years later expanded to other European countries, as well as Canada, Australia and Asia.

In the 2023 edition, a Dragon Oak was also chosen, in Slovakia (2nd place), the Krolevtsi Apple Tree Colony (Malus domestica), in Ukraine (3rd), a strangler fig, in the Botanical Garden of Palermo, in Italy (4th), and a contigeous eucalyptus, in Portugal (5th).
